Rhea Chakraborty’s Bank Accounts Released: Why Were They Frozen Amid Sushant Singh Rajput Case – EXPLAINED
Rhea Chakraborty recently received legal relief as a Mumbai court ordered the release of her and her family’s frozen bank accounts, which were blocked in 2020 during the Narcotics Control Bureau’s probe linked to Sushant Singh Rajput’s case.
In a major relief, actress and reality show personality Rhea Chakraborty’s bank accounts have been released. For those unversed, the accounts linked to her, brother Showik Chakraborty and mother Sandhya were frozen by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in 2020 during its investigation linked to Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case. A special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court in Mumbai directed the body to unfreeze them and permit transactions. Rhea, ex-girlfriend of the Bollywood actor who was found dead in his apartment, had received a clean chit from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last year.
Four bank accounts linked to Rhea, her brother Showik and their mother have been released. Reportedly, the required legal steps under the NDPS Act were not completed on time, so the freezing of accounts could not be continued.
In four orders passed on Saturday, the court observed that the agency did not get approval for freezing the accounts from the competent authority within the time required under the NDPS Act. Because of this, the freezing was not legally valid.
The court allowed the petitions filed by Rhea and her family, noting that the law clearly limits the power to freeze property and those rules were not followed in this case. Calling this a serious lapse, the court said that since the required legal order was missing, the applications had to be accepted.
It also directed that the accounts be unfrozen and allowed to be operated as per RBI guidelines.
The court also referred to a Bombay High Court judgment, which said that the power to freeze property is not unlimited and must follow constitutional safeguards. It stated that authorities must have a proper “reason to believe” that the property is linked to illegal activity and must report and confirm it quickly, otherwise the action becomes invalid.

After Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in 2020, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) began its probe into the drug-related angle. The agency claimed that a larger drug network involving supply and consumption was operating in Bollywood. Rhea and others were named in the case, and a chargesheet was filed alleging a wider conspiracy. Several celebrities were also questioned by the anti-drug agency.
They froze the accounts, alleging that Rhea and her brother had links to drug dealers, which justified the action. However, the court did not examine these allegations. It looked at the legal procedure and said that since the mandatory steps were not followed.
Last year, the Bombay High Court ordered the NCB to permanently return Chakraborty’s passport, easing travel restrictions imposed during her 2020 bail.
Rhea, who had to seek permission for every foreign trip earlier, shared a post which read, “Patience was my only passport for the past 5 years. Countless battles. Endless hope. Today, I hold my passport again. Ready for my Chapter 2! Satyameva Jayate.”
The CBI had also ruled out foul play and said that SSR’s death was a suicide.
