RGNUL Punjab Proposes Removal Of ‘Rajiv Gandhi’ From Name, Triggers Political Debate
As of March 2026, the Academic Council of the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, has officially proposed renaming the institution to “National Law University, Punjab" by dropping “Rajiv Gandhi" from its name. This decision aims to achieve branding uniformity among National Law Universities (NLUs), and it is now awaiting final approval from the Executive Council and the Punjab state government.
The decision behind this change is to create a neutral and more recognisable brand name, similar to NLU Delhi, and to establish a consistent modern identity for NLUs.
“The Academic Council considered the said recommendations in depth and after due deliberations, agreed with the proposal of the Dean (Academic) to change the name of the University from ‘Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab’ to ‘National Law University, Punjab’," the Council stated.
Furthermore, it recommended the change to the Executive Council for approval.
The RGNUL Academic Council consists of 12 members, including 4 RGNUL faculty members, the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, and others. Registrar Ivneet Kaur Walia confirmed the authenticity of the document and mentioned that the move is pending the decision of the Executive Council.
Vice Chancellor Professor Jaishankar Singh earlier confirmed that the proposal has been approved by the Academic Council. However, for this change to take effect, an amendment act must be passed by the Punjab Assembly, as the university was established in 2006 under the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Act.
In November 2025, Acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, had requested the central government to change the name. He argued that the name Rajiv Gandhi, in the wake of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community and called it an insult to the Sikh community.
The name change proposal is controversial because it involves political, and historical issues.
Move Triggers Political Debate
Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi, Member of Parliament, Patiala, strongly condemns the move to change the name of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, Punjab. He stated that institutions established during the tenure of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and Shri Rajiv Gandhi were founded with the vision of strengthening education, promoting scientific temper, advancing technology, and ensuring social welfare. These institutions represent a legacy of nation building and progressive development.
He alleged that the BJP-RSS is systematically attempting to alter history and rename institutions associated with the Congress legacy all over India. Such actions, he said, are an attempt to divert the attention of the people of India from core issues such as education, health, unemployment, environmental degradation, and rising socio-economic challenges that directly affect every citizen.
Dr. Gandhi termed this as “politics of a very low level" and urged the government to focus on real developmental concerns instead of shifting focus away from pressing national challenges.
