Manipur: Residents denounce murderous attack on Assam Rifles, hold protests

In Manipur's Bishnupur district, an ambush by unidentified gunmen resulted in the death of two Assam Rifles jawans and injuries to five others. Residents of Nambol Sabal Leikai strongly condemned the attack, holding protests and demanding safety.
Guwahati: Residents of Sabal Leikai in Ningthoukhong in Bishnupur district of Manipur vehemently denounced the egregious attack on Assam Rifles jawans on Saturday. Two Assam Rifles jawans were killed and five injured in an ambush carried out by unidentified gunmen.
Two Assam Rifles personnel, including a Naib-Subedar, were killed and five others injured when a group of unidentified armed cadres attacked a vehicle of the paramilitary force along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) in Bishnupur district's Nambol Sabal Leikai area. The slain Assam Rifles personnel are Naib-Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap. Gurung hails from Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district while Kashyap is a resident of Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.
Many women and men of all ages held massive protests in the Nambol area.During the protest, demonstrators carried placards with powerful messages, "We condemn the attack", "Condemn attack on Assam Rifles", "Condemn gunfire in public places".

The Manipur government has announced in recognition of the sacrifice made by the families of the deceased; the government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for those who succumbed to injuries (death) and Rs 2 lakh for those who sustained grievous injuries .
A defence spokesman said that a column of troops of Assam Rifles was moving from its Patsoi company operating base to Nambol company operating base when it was ambushed in the general area of Nambol Sabal Leikai by unidentified terrorists on the highway in the denotified area of Manipur.
In the ensuing action, two personnel of Assam Rifles were killed and five were injured and have since been evacuated to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, the spokesman said, adding that they are currently stable.
The Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, 1958, (AFSPA) was earlier lifted from the Nambol Sabal Leikai area.
A senior Police official said that though no militant group or organisations has claimed responsibility for the attack. “The suspicions are on the valley-based outfit.”
Manipur is under President's rule. Over 260 people were killed, more than 1,500 injured, and over 70,000 people displaced after the ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zo people on My 3,2023 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March', organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
