The government has capped seat selection fees and directed airlines to make 60% of seats available for free, aiming to enhance passenger convenience.
In a major relief for the air travelers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airline operators to ensure that at least 60 per cent of seats on every flight are allocated free of cost for selection.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued an order to make air travel in India more transparent and accessible.
Previously, several airlines levied additional charges for selecting preferred seats after booking or during web check-in. The new directive aims to curb these practices and guarantee “fair access” for all passengers.
The move follows complaints from passengers about hidden costs, including seat selection fees, with accusations that airlines were exploiting customers. Travellers may now benefit from reduced hidden charges, as the government moves to limit extra fees for seat selection and strengthen passenger rights across airlines.
The initiative to curb these charges is part of a broader set of passenger-focused regulations introduced by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. Currently, seat prices vary by location, window and aisle seats, as well as those with extra legroom, incur higher fees, while only a few seats, typically in the middle rows and at the back, are exempt from additional charges.
The Ministry, through the DGCA, has also instructed airlines to seat passengers on the same PNR together, preferably in adjacent seats, addressing a long-standing concern for families and groups. Often, group members request others to change seats, which can lead to disputes before take-off, NDTV reported.
The regulator has further emphasised safeguarding passenger rights in cases of delays, cancellations, and denied boarding, and has directed airlines to prominently display these rights on their websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and at airport counters.
Airlines have also been directed to implement clear and transparent policies for transporting sports equipment, musical instruments, and pets, addressing frequent passenger complaints about inconsistent rules and high fees, as per the NDTV.
The regulator emphasised that these policies should comply with safety and operational standards while being communicated in a passenger-friendly manner. Airlines are also required to provide information on passenger rights in regional languages to enhance accessibility.
