RCB Star Takes Cricket Board To Court Seeking NOC To Play In IPL 2026

Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has reportedly filed a petition in the Colombo District Court, seeking an order directing Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to issue him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) so he can participate in the ongoing IPL 2026. Thushara is currently contracted to defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Thushara was retained by RCB for this season after being signed at the IPL 2025 mega auction for Rs 1.6 crore. The right-arm pacer has played eight IPL matches so far, picking up nine wickets at an economy rate of 9.43.
According to News Wire, the 31-year-old has named SLC President Shammi Silva, Secretary Bandula Dissanayake, Treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda, and CEO Ashley de Silva as defendants in his petition.
The report states that SLC denied Thushara the NOC, citing his failure to meet fitness standards. However, Thushara has argued that he had already informed the board of his decision not to renew his contract, which expired on March 31, and to step away from international cricket. He says his current fitness level is consistent with what he has maintained throughout his career and similar fitness levels didn’t stop SLC from giving him NOCs in the past.
He also claims that since he had been told he would not be considered for national selection, denying him the NOC is unjustified. Thushara added that he stands to suffer significant financial losses if he is not granted permission, as RCB could replace him due to his unavailability.
The case is scheduled to be heard on April 9.
Defending champions RCB opened their campaign on a strong note, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the season opener. In a high-scoring match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium last week, RCB chased down 202 in just 15.4 overs, with Virat Kohli (69*) and Devdutt Padikkal (61) scoring half-centuries.
RCB will next face Chennai Super Kings on April 5.
