It is a moment of happiness and big relief for Rajpal Yadav's fans, as in today's hearing the Delhi HC granted interim suspension of sentence to the actor in his debt and cheque bounce case after he deposited a total of Rs 1.5 crore in the respondent's account. It has been confirmed that this bail has been granted to him to attend his niece's wedding.
Rajpal has been given bail, with the HC suspending the sentence until the next hearing, which is scheduled for March 18. On that date, the actor has been asked to appear before the court either physically or through video call.
How this case began
Back in 2010, Rajpal Yadav had borrowed ₹5 crore from Delhi-based Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata. The film did not perform at the box office, and the loan remained unpaid. Court records show that seven cheques issued later bounced.
The dispute escalated legally, and in April 2018, a Magisterial Court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha. He was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment. The conviction was upheld by a Sessions Court in early 2019, after which Yadav approached the Delhi High Court in appeal.
What led to Rajpal's arrest?
In 2024, the court had directed the actor to show sincere measures to repay the heavy dues, but in February 2026 the court ordered the actor to surrender, as there were multiple breaches of undertakings to repay the amount. Before surrendering, Rajpal spoke to Bollywood Hungama and made an emotional remark.
Speaking about failing to repay the amount even after years, Rajpal shared, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta (sir, what to do? I don't have the money to pay back. Can't see another way out).”
Industry came out in support of Rajpal
Following his being sent to Tihar Jail, several actors decided to give financial aid to Yadav and even made a public appeal to fellow members of the industry to help him in these tough times. From Sonu Sood, Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan to Gurmeet Choudhary, many lent support to him. Meanwhile, many singers and filmmakers gave him advance payments and cast him in their upcoming projects.
