Riyan Parag, who took over the reins as Rajasthan Royals’ captain, had a mature take after his men beat Chennai Super Kings comprehensively in their IPL 2026 opener.
Riyan Parag, the 24-year-old dashing middle-order batter, has a massive responsibility riding on his shoulders: to lead a franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) edition of 2026. Parag, who is no stranger to donning the captain’s hat before, having captained Rajasthan Royals in the absence of Sanju Samson the previous year, took over the reins after Samson left the franchise to join the Chennai Super Kings camp.
Parag’s new journey as the full-time RR leader is already being lauded by IPL fans and critics alike, as they believe Rajasthan Royals have chosen a captain who is here to stay. All this praise despite RR having played just a single encounter in the recently commenced IPL 2026.
So why is everyone looking forward to Parag’s captaincy, and how has he made a deep impact on cricket lovers?
RR took on CSK at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Monday, where Parag won the toss and put the MS Dhoni-less squad to bat first. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Yellow Army had a horror beginning to their maiden outing of this season. South African left-arm pacer Nandre Burger worked in tandem with England’s Jofra Archer as the two demolished the top order CSK batters, leaving them tattered at 19/3 in 3.1 overs.
Burger received the Player of the Match award for his stunning bowling figures of 2/26 in 4 overs, while Archer kept things quiet during his 2/19 in 4 overs. CSK, the five-time champions, were bundled out for 127 without completing their designated overs.
Rajasthan Royals’ chase was spearheaded by the Indian prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who thumped a 15-ball half-century at the top. RR achieved the target with as many as 47 deliveries to spare. It was an all-round dominant performance by the Rajasthan men, one that Parag would be proud of after kickstarting his captaincy as the pack’s leader. However, the young cricketer from India caught the attention of many for his responses to media questions after RR hammered CSK in their opening IPL 2026 encounter.
Parag was at his articulate best as he spoke about balancing pressure and the opinions beyond the field, and how he has tried to stay focused on his game, which has helped him mature as a player.
“I think if I start talking about the journey, it’s going to be a long answer. But like I said earlier, it’s a lot of things that go outside my game, a lot of opinions about me off the field, which is something I’ve learned not to let affect me. I think I’m doing that pretty well, and the same has happened this year as well,” Parag said in the post-match presentation.
Parag wasn’t done just yet. He touched upon the intricacies of captaincy and how a win or a loss determined the quality of the decisions made by a captain. He revealed that despite the commanding win over CSK, he approached his analyst to learn what he should have done differently while his team was fielding.
“It’s the irony with cricket. If I had done the same things today and they had scored 200 and we had lost the game, the narrative would have been that I’m a bad captain or that I made bad decisions. That’s why, even after the game ended, I went to the dressing room and spoke with my analyst about what I could have done better. He had a point that I could have given Bishnoi another over, and I explained my reasoning, why I didn’t bring him on, because Overton was batting and he might have hit him for a couple of sixes or whatever,” he added.
He concluded by saying that wins always appeared better because they made the captain’s choices during the match seem right, but a captain should also be subjected to the same analysis and level of scrutiny in their losses.
“So I think it’s very result-based, result-oriented. If we end up on the winning side, everything looks better. But I feel if you’re saying this now, I expect you to say the same when we lose a game and analyse it properly.”
Parag’s poise during the presentation and his reflection on the nuances of captaincy were praised by the IPL viewers who firmly believed Rajasthan Royals were in safe hands. Many also voiced that the Assamese all-rounder had a bright future ahead of him as he seemed to possess the traits of a long-term leader.
“People loved listening to MS Dhoni in press conferences; in the coming years, people will sit and listen to Riyan Parag the same way. The maturity he’s showing at such a young age is truly impressive,” X user @chinmay_marwadi wrote.
Parag was preferred for the top job over the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sam Curran.
“Riyan Parag has proved himself as a captain why rajasthan royals choose him over ravindra jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal. I feel under his leadership RR will reaching greater height and the support from home fans in guwahati was a tremendous (sic).”
A third IPL viewer found Parag’s mention of the analyst while discussing captaincy and the impacts of game results refreshing.
The 24-year-old cricketer has been associated with the Rajasthan Royals since 2019. Parag debuted as RR captain in the previous year’s edition in Samson’s absence, where he won two out of eight contests. As for RR, they will lock horns with Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (4th April).
