India asserted strong dominance over West Indies in the first Test, reaching 448 for 5 and securing a commanding 286-run lead by Day 2. Centuries from KL Rahul (100), Dhruv Jurel (125), and Ravindra Jadeja (104*) powered India's innings on a pitch that evolved throughout the day. Their exceptional batting performances have placed India firmly in control of the match.
KL Rahul put two fingers to his lips and let out a sharp whistle, dedicating his century to his infant daughter. Dhruv Jurel presented arms, stomped his foot and paid homage to the armed forces, of which his father was a part, when he reached three figures. Ravindra Jadeja honoured his Rajput ancestry with his bat-twirling sword celebration upon getting to his ton. It was that sort of day for India, when so much went according to plan. The home team romped to 448 for 5, a lead of 286, ensuring that West Indies were left far behind in the first Test in Ahmedabad.
After some years of playing on rank turners, India returned to their roots, serving up a surface from the 1990s. Here was a pitch that gave the fast bowlers something first up, an advantage West Indies squandered by choosing to bat first. Then, as the ball got softer and the moisture burnt off in the heat, batting got steadily easier, especially for batsmen who took the time to get set. And, towards the end of the second day, the footmarks created by the bowlers gave purchase and variable bounce to the spinners.
When the day began, West Indies were still in with a sniff. This could've got better in the very first over, when Jayden Seales got one to leave KL Rahul and drew the outside edge. For reasons unknown, Alick Athanaze, the lone slip, was stationed wide, and the ball sailed harmlessly between him and the keeper.
From there on, though, India bedded down and slowly but steadily shifted the pressure onto the West Indies. Rahul, who scored two hundreds in England and built up to this series with a big century against Australia A, took his time. He played the ball late and scoredheavily behind square on the off side. He tipped and ran sharp singles, defended in an unhurried manner and treated each ball on merit: exactly what you would expect of a Test opener. Rahul was dismissed for 100, his 10th as an opener, moving past Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, who each have nine hundreds at the top of the order. Only Murali Vijay (12), Virender Sehwag (22) and Sunil Gavaskar (33) have more Test hundreds opening the innings.
“I think the only thing that I've worked on in the last year or so has been maintaining my batting tempo,” Rahul told the host broadcaster. “...when you travel abroad and play in seaming, swinging conditions with extra bounce, there's a lot of challenge doing that. And when we come back home, when there are three spinners playing and the field's spread out, you really need to dig in and need to get your runs with singles. The boundaries don't come that easily. So yeah, that's something that I've worked on. I needed to make that mental switch to enjoy doing that, enjoy grinding and getting 100s” Jadeja's innings was different from Rahul's in that he used his feet readily to the spinners. Shimmying down the track, Jadeja was open to clouting the ball into the stands, but when he wasn't quite to the pitch of the ball, he was happy to just chip it safely. This ensured the spinners could not settle into a steady line and length, leaving Roston Chase, the West Indies captain, with a real headache.
Jurel, who's been nothing but impressive behind the stumps and in front of it in the limited chances he has got in Tests, was efficient in how he made the most of the latest opportunity. He did not try to manufacture the big shots, but his attitude was positive and his intent spot on. The runs flowed freely off his blade, and it was against the run of play that Jurel was dismissed on 125, feathering a nick to the keeper off left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, giving the debutant his maiden Test scalp.
Unbeaten on 104, Jadeja had Washington Sundar for company when the second day ended. With plenty of time left and this being the beginning of the season, India can bat as long as they please before coming hard at West Indies with the ball in their second dig.
