It's already been a full year since Rafael Nadal packed away his racket for good. But retirement clearly hasn't kept the Spanish legend off the court.
Nadal, who stepped away from tennis in 2024 after collecting 22 Grand Slam singles titles, has quietly been testing where his level stands these days.
His latest hitting partner? Rising Filipino star and WTA sensation Alexandra Eala.
Eala, now 20, has been one of the breakout names of the season. She became the first Filipino to break into the WTA top 50 and claimed her maiden WTA title in September — a milestone Nadal publicly celebrated at the time.
Their connection runs deep: Eala has spent six years training at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, joining the program when she was just 12 before graduating in 2023.
This week, the two reunited for a practice session, and Nadal couldn't resist poking fun afterwards. Posting on X, he wrote:
“One year later, it felt great to be back on a tennis court!
It was great to practice with you, Alexandra Eala! Next time, I will be stronger."
For Eala, the moment marks another chapter in a year full of firsts.
She became the first Filipino player to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match at the US Open and made history in Miami by reaching the semifinals — the first Filipino ever to reach that stage at a WTA 1000 event.
That run also vaulted her to the highest ranking ever achieved by a Filipino player.
