Q-comm set to grow in '26; whether it’ll make money remains unclear: Amazon India chief

Quick commerce is expected to grow significantly by 2026, but it remains to be seen whether the business will make money, said Samir Kumar, country manager, Amazon India.
“We look at three things: is it something that's differentiated and that customers value? I think customers do value quick commerce. Second, will it scale? Based on what I see today, it will. The third question is whether by 2026 we can make money from it, overall. That's something we'll have to see,” said Kumar in response to ET's question.
Amazon Now, the firm's quick commerce service, has ramped up in India, and is adding two dark stores daily across Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Mumbai with the aim of having 300 stores by the end of the year.
“We will continue to expand our footprint. We'll enter more cities and more countries, and we'll keep building. We will also keep inventing and innovating to find ways to add more products to our dark stores,” Kumar added.
The quick commerce service currently offers groceries, vegetables, beauty and personal care, home care, snacks and beverages, meat, and other items.
Earlier, ET had reported that Amazon is targeting pole position across all its businesses, including 10-minute delivery, despite being the last major entrant in India's thriving quick commerce market.
In an earlier interview with ET, Kumar had said that Amazon will not hold back on investing in quick commerce, a segment which requires high burn to gain market share.
Amazon on Wednesday raised its India investment commitment to $35 billion, saying it will deploy the capital across logistics infrastructure and artificial intelligence.
In September, Amazon Now entered Mumbai after its launch in Bengaluru and Delhi. As of September 11, it had over 100 dark stores across the three cities.
