Even as debate around AI intensifies across industries, concerns about the technology are also growing. In an interview with CNN-News18 at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales discusses artificial intelligence, misinformation risks, open-source innovation, and the future of human-led knowledge systems. In this conversation, he explains why AI should assist — not replace — humans, and what that means for technology and global participation. Edited excerpts:
I did a bit of research before this interview, and what I could understand about your opinion on AI is that it should assist humans, not replace human editorial communities. Can you elaborate on this?
The large language model (LLM) breakthrough is remarkable. It can generate large amounts of perfectly grammatical text in many languages, but it still struggles with factual accuracy, and hallucinations remain a serious issue. While we see some use cases for this, and many people are exploring them, we are very much about humans in the loop. We are about humans verifying knowledge, debating and discussing, trying to get every word exactly right. So, we see some change coming, but we’re still very grounded in human knowledge.
This summit is taking place for the first time in the Global South. Over the past decade, a few countries and companies from the developed world have dominated this ecosystem. Do you think India is positioning itself as a bridge between the Global North and Global South, helping democratise this technology and shifting the narrative so developing nations are participants, not just consumers?
One of the things I watch very closely is developments in open-source software and open-source AI. People are using models designed to run on much smaller hardware, which means individual developers can now run quite capable AI on a laptop — maybe not quite as good as the very best models at the moment, perhaps six months behind. That has major implications for the developing world and for mid-tier countries like India, which has had a strong IT sector for a long time and a large pool of talented developers who don’t need to rely on big proprietary models. A cluster costing about $100,000 can run a really impressive model. That means many startups don’t have to depend on the biggest players. That’s where much of the interesting innovation is happening, and many researchers and scientists are working in that space. So it’s a very exciting time.
Will AI reduce the need for traditional encyclopedias?
I don’t think so. The idea of an encyclopedia is a very carefully vetted sum of human knowledge, and that is the core foundation that AI systems rely on. They all use Wikipedia — they read it to understand the world. We’re very passionate about our model and about producing high-quality content.
Should AI-generated content ever be allowed directly into Wikipedia articles?
When we say the word “ever", it becomes difficult to answer definitively. What’s exciting about AI is its language capability, and we’re already seeing volunteers use machine translation — even between languages like French and English — at a much higher quality than before. In that sense, some content is already machine-generated. But broadly, we are only looking at AI as a tool to support our editing community — for example, helping identify problems in articles or gather sources. It’s an exciting time, but we don’t anticipate AI being able to write Wikipedia anytime soon.
How can Wikipedia preserve human editorial judgment?
It’s the same way we always have. One of the challenges today is the rise of AI-generated clutter across the internet. Yet we still very much need journalists to sift through information as humans and determine what is true and what is real, because AI doesn’t actually know what’s real.
Should editors disclose when they use AI tools while drafting content?
That’s definitely best practice — to say, for example, ‘I used AI to help find sources’ or ‘I used AI to translate this’. Then other editors can review it with that context. It’s is very important.
Who should be responsible when AI systems spread false information — developers, users, or platforms?
Whoever is the human spreading the false information is the first line of responsibility. People create false stories and spread them. What tools they use is secondary. Ultimately, it’s about taking responsibility for your own actions as a human being.
