The BJP has refuted opposition claims that the Sanchar Saathi app is for government snooping, asserting its purpose is to enhance user safety against fraud and crime. The app aims to prevent IMEI duplication, track stolen phones, and identify fraudulent activities, with users having the discretion to install or delete it.
New Delhi: BJP on Tuesday accused the Opposition of spreading "misinformation" about the Sanchar Saathi app, and said its purpose was to ensure people's safety from fraud and other crimes, not to snoop on them. "Those who are champions of misinformation will never understand what Sanchar Saathi is. Does the government want to snoop on you through Sanchar Saathi? No. The government wants to do no snooping. Sanchar Saathi app cannot read your messages, it cannot listen to your calls and it cannot breach your personal data," BJP spokesman Sambit Patra told media persons at a press conference at party headquarters here.
"Its job is to provide security to users, stop fraud, track stolen mobile phones and return it to their rightful owners... It reports suspicious and fraudulent calls. You can report spam, malicious links on Sanchar Saathi."
Patra raised concerns that IMEI numbers on mobiles were being duplicated these days and added that through 'Sanchar Saathi', this duplication can be stopped. "Several people use mobile phones under different names. They use them for fraud. Sanchar Saathi will know at once how many mobile phones are used under one user's name," he added.
Patra also rejected the Opposition's claims that it is mandatory for every user. "Keeping it on the device or not is up to the user. It can be deleted from the mobile phone just like any other app," he said.
