Punjab bans Coldrif cough syrup with immediate effect for failing quality test
Punjab has banned 'Coldrif' cough syrup after it was found to contain diethylene glycol at levels far exceeding the permitted limit. The syrup, produced by Sresan Pharma, was declared 'Not of Standard Quality,' leading to a criminal case against the manufacturer and the prescribing doctor. This action follows previous international concerns over Indian-made cough syrups linked to child deaths.
Punjab government on Tuesday banned ‘Coldrif' cough syrup with immediate effect after authorities declared it “not of Standard Quality,” news agency PTI reported citing officials.
Other states, including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, have also banned the syrup. Meanwhile, health ministry has issued an advisory urging the rational use of cough syrups for children, recommending “judicious prescribing and dispensing” since most childhood coughs resolve without medication.
These development came after a report from a Madhya Pradesh drug laboratory revealed that the syrup contained 46.28% diethylene glycol, far above the permitted limit of 0.1%.
Diethylene glycol, commonly used in products such as antifreeze, cosmetics, and lubricants, can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, and acute kidney injury, which may be fatal, according to the World Health Organization.
Following the findings, police registered a criminal case on Sunday against the doctor who prescribed the cough syrup, arresting him along with the manufacturer of the drug.
Sresan Pharma faces charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, drug adulteration, and violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Regulatory authorities have also recommended cancellation of the company's manufacturing license, according to a Reuters report.
The contaminated batch of ‘Coldrif' was distributed only within India, limiting its reach compared with prior global incidents, the report added.
India is a major supplier of generic medicines worldwide, providing 40% of such drugs used in the United States, 25% in the United Kingdom, and over 90% in many African nations.
