With the end of the Diwali festivities, Pune is bracing for a surge in traffic as thousands of employees and students prepare to travel back to their cities of work and study. Keeping in account the expected post-festival rush, the Pune Traffic Police have issued an advisory alerting motorists about potential congestion on major highways.

The advisory, jointly issued by the Superintendent of Police (State Highways, Pune), the Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pune City, urges commuters to plan their journeys carefully and anticipate congestion on key routes between October 24 and 27.

The alert comes in view of increased vehicle movement following the Diwali celebrations. Authorities have highlighted the likelihood of heavy vehicle movement and have advised commuters to plan their travel in advance and use public transport wherever possible to reduce congestion and ensure smoother post-festival travel.

Which Are The Likely Congestion Zones?

The advisory lists the following routes as likely congestion zones:

Bengaluru–Mumbai National Highway (NH-48): Heavy traffic is expected from Kolhapur towards Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Mira-Bhayandar.

Nashik–Pune National Highway (NH-50): Possible delay is anticipated from Nashik via Chakan towards Pune.

Solapur–Pune National Highway (NH-65): Increased traffic is expected from Solapur towards Pune and adjoining regions.

What Do The Authorities Suggest?

Motorists are advised to avoid peak travel hours between 7 AM–11 AM and 5 PM–9 PM, and to consider alternate routes for a smoother journey. Traffic police will be deployed along key stretches to manage vehicle flow and assist commuters in case of emergencies.

Authorities have also appealed to citizens to follow traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with officers on duty.

Alternate Ways: Open Google Maps or take guidance from locals to beat the traffic by not joining the popular highways. Instead of joining the long queues on the Mumbai-Pune Motorway, Pune-Bengaluru, Pune-Solapur, Pune-Nashik, or Samruddhi Highways, go for the ample alternative routes available to reach your destination.

Start Very Early or Very Late: The best way to avoid this traffic congestion is by starting your journey early in the morning at the crack of dawn or as late as the clock strikes midnight.

Work From Home: If possible, request your employer to allow remote work for a few days, enabling you to travel and return without any hassle.
