Cyclone Ditwah: Puducherry Schools Remain Shut Today Amid Rain Alert

Puducherry schools closed today as authorities take precautionary steps in view of expected heavy rainfall from Cyclone Ditwah. Home and Education Minister A Namassivayam announced that all institutions, including private and government-aided schools across the four regions of the Union Territory, will remain shut on December 1.

He added that the administration is closely tracking the weather conditions and has put necessary arrangements in place.

Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a deep depression, and the system is expected to hover over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, by Monday morning, according to meteorological officials. The weather system has been drifting northwards at around 10 kmph and was centred over the same region as of late Sunday night.

Meteorologists noted that the system is positioned not far off the coastline, lying roughly 90 km from Puducherry and Chennai, and a little over 100 km from Cuddalore. With the circulation moving closer to land, private weather observers have said that districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Ranipet could see intermittent rainfall early Monday.

Rain linked to Cyclone Ditwah has already affected several parts of Tamil Nadu. The state government confirmed that three people have died in rain-related incidents.

The name Ditwah was proposed by Yemen, referring to a saline lagoon, most likely inspired by the Detwah Lagoon on the northwest coast of Socotra.
