Protect Your Lungs: Doctors Warn Of Rising Pneumonia Risk Amid Smog
Each winter, as smog thickens and the air turns colder, our lungs silently bear the brunt. Among the many seasonal illnesses that emerge, one often slips under the radar – pneumonia. It doesn't announce itself with drama, yet it remains one of the world's deadliest infections. Every year, World Pneumonia Day (November 12) reminds us that this preventable disease still claims millions of lives, especially among children, the elderly, and those with weakened immunity.
Despite being both treatable and avoidable, pneumonia continues to thrive in environments where pollution, low awareness, and delayed medical attention collide. The good news?
Pneumonia is more than just a lung infection. It's an inflammation that fills the lungs' air sacs with fluid or pus, making breathing difficult and depriving the body of oxygen. Early signs often mimic seasonal flu, with symptoms like fever, cough, fatigue, or shortness of breath, leading many to dismiss it until it becomes critical.
As Dr. Ajoy Krishna Sarkar, Director of Critical Care at Peerless Hospital & B.K Roy Research Institute, Kolkata, explained, “Pneumococcus is the most common organism causing community-acquired pneumonia and dreadful diseases like meningitis. This disease can be treated if we manage it at its early stage, but most importantly, now we have very good vaccines in our hands."
In India, where the air pollution crisis deepens each winter, pneumonia cases often spike as smog and low temperatures weaken respiratory defences. Polluted air doesn't just irritate the lungs. It damages their lining, making it easier for bacteria and viruses to invade.
Dr. Anup Warrier, Head of Infectious Diseases & Infection Control at Aster DM Healthcare, Kochi, highlighted this link, saying, “The lung damage caused by smog makes individuals, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, highly susceptible to infections like pneumococcal disease."
He added that vaccines remain a crucial safeguard: “The pneumococcal vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of severe disease, particularly in polluted environments, and should be prioritized in at-risk populations."
