T20 World Cup: Proteas edge past Afghans in double Super Over thriller

T20 World Cup: Proteas edge past Afghans in double Super Over thriller
It is said that for lasting success, one has to go through the full cycle of emotions. In the ongoing T20 World Cup, South Africa seems to have embarked on that journey.
After stuttering ever so slightly against Canada, it nearly fell flat on its face, not once but twice against Afghanistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday, before lifting itself up and going past the finish line huffing and puffing.
Aiden Markram & Co. needed two Super Overs — after scores were tied at 187 runs each at the end of regulation time — to take a giant step towards qualification for the Super Eights.
Afghanistan scored 17 in the first shootout but South Africa matched it as Tristan Stubbs smashed a last-ball six off Fazalhaq Farooqi.
In the second tie-breaker, Stubbs and David Miller plundered 23, and when Keshav Maharaj bowled a dot and had Mohammed Nabi caught at point from the first two balls, it seemed all over.
But Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored a brilliant 84 (42b, 4x4, 7x6) earlier in the afternoon, carted Maharaj for three sixes in a row.
A subsequent wide meant Gurbaz, with a boundary off the final delivery, could drag the fixture into an unprecedented third Super Over, but it was not to be.

For Afghanistan, it was a second double-Super Over match in just over two years — previous one versus India in Bengaluru in January 2024 — and it has lost both.
The latest defeat also leaves its position in the World Cup precarious, with losses to both its fellow Group D contenders New Zealand and South Africa.

But should the contest even have gone to the first Super Over, let alone the second? With one wicket remaining and Afghanistan needing 13 from the 20th over, Kagiso Rabada had Noor Ahmad caught at cover, only for it to be a no-ball.
Then, Rabada bowled a wide, got hit by Noor for a six, and came up with another no-ball costing three runs to leave the Afghans requiring two from three.
But in an anti-climax, Farooqi was run out while stealing a double, a situation he could have entirely avoided by grounding the bat earlier.
Despite the manic action towards the finish that is sure to have a higher degree of permanence, it would be remiss not to doff the hat to Ryan Rickelton’s belligerent hitting (61, 28b, 5x4, 4x6), Afghanistan’s splendid bowling from overs 13 to 18 (four for 35), Lungi Ngidi’s second consecutive top-draw effort (4-0-26-3) and the Proteas’ fantastic fielding.
After all, the process matters as much as the ending.
The scores: South Africa 187/6 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock 59, Ryan Rickelton 61, Azmatullah Omarzai 3/41, Rashid Khan 2/28) tied with Afghanistan 187 in 19.4 overs (Rahmanullah Gurbaz 84, Lungi Ngidi 3/26).
Super Over 1: Afghanistan 17/0 tied with South Africa 17/1; Super Over 2: South Africa 23/0 bt Afghanistan 19/2.
Toss: Afghanistan; PoM: Ngidi.
