A fortune-teller in South Pattaya, Thailand, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a teenager's iPhone 13 Pro to “prove” a prophecy of misfortune. The 19-year-old woman confronted him after noticing her phone had gone missing during the reading. Police later discovered the device hidden in his bag, which led to his confession and subsequent arrest.
A fortune-teller in South Pattaya, Thailand, has been arrested after allegedly stealing a teenager's mobile phone to “prove” a prophecy of misfortune, local media reports revealed. The bizarre incident took place on 1 January opposite Wat Chaimongkol, a royal temple popular among both tourists and locals.
Teenager Loses iPhone During New Year Fortune Reading
According to The Independent, citing Thai media outlet Khaosod, the 38-year-old suspect was offering fortune-telling services outside the temple when a 19-year-old woman, identified only as Pim, approached him.During the session, the fortune-teller warned that Pim was about to face bad luck and would soon lose something valuable. He allegedly suggested that she pay him money to prevent the misfortune.
Pim refused the request. However, shortly after leaving, she noticed that her iPhone 13 Pro was missing. She recalled placing it beside her during the reading and rushed back to confront the man.
The fortune-teller reportedly insisted that the theft confirmed his prediction and even described what the “thief” supposedly looked like.
Police Intervene After Suspicious Behaviour
Growing suspicious, Pim sought help from passersby. Police were called when the missing phone was discovered hidden inside the fortune-teller's bag, concealed within a box intended for face masks.The suspect later confessed to the theft, claiming it was his first offence and that he needed money for the New Year, according to Khaosod.
He was taken into custody at Pattaya City Police Station, where authorities seized the stolen phone along with his fortune-telling equipment. Pim's device was subsequently returned to her.
