'Promoting Foreign Culture': 4 Detained In Afghanistan For Wearing Peaky Blinders-Style Outfits
Four young men in Afghanistan's Herat province were detained and placed in a rehabilitation program after walking around in public dressed as characters from the British drama Peaky Blinders, according to a report by CBS News, which first detailed the incident.
Citing Afghanistan's Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, CBS News said the men, known locally in Jibrail township for strolling through the streets in trench coats and flat caps, were accused of “promoting foreign culture."

Saif-ur-Islam Khyber, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed to CBS News that the group, all in their early 20s, had been taken into custody in Jibrail. In an earlier social media post, he said, “They were promoting foreign culture and imitating film actors in Herat, arrested, and a rehabilitation program started for them. Praise be to Allah, we are Muslims and Afghans; we have our own religion, culture, and values. Through numerous sacrifices, we have protected this country from the spread of harmful cultures, and now we are also defending it."
However, speaking directly to CBS News on Tuesday, Khyber offered a modified account, saying the men had not been formally arrested. “Only summoned and advised and released," he said.

He added that their outfits and behavior were seen as inconsistent with Afghan norms. “We have our own religious and cultural values, and especially for clothing we have specific traditional styles," he told CBS News.
“The clothing they wore has no Afghan identity at all and does not match our culture. Secondly, their actions were an imitation of actors from a British movie. Our society is Muslim; if we are to follow or imitate someone, we should follow our righteous religious predecessors in good and lawful matters."
