Preservation over preparation: Novak Djokovic’s inverted path for slam glory

Novak Djokovic, defying age and expectations, approaches the Australian Open with an unconventional strategy: preservation over preparation. Despite skipping tune-up events, the Serbian legend, still a top contender, relies on his unparalleled familiarity with Melbourne Park and years of ingrained success. Younger rivals acknowledge his enduring dominance, with Holger Rune stating nothing is impossible for Djokovic.
“What Novak is doing is impressive. In every tournament, he reaches at least the semi-finals, and people are talking about when he'll stop”.
22-year-old Holger Rune, ranked 15 on the ATP computer, is 16 years younger than the player he is commenting on. As the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia creeps up on the horizon, younger men such as Rune are still looking over their shoulders where Novak Djokovic looms large. Winless at a Grand Slam for the last two years, as two generational talents have carved up the eight majors on offer, yet never far removed from a conversation about contenders for the big titles.
“You never know with Novak,” says Rune. “What he's doing is already impossible, so if you ask me if it's impossible for him to win more Grand Slams, if you ask me about any other player his age, I'd say no, impossible, but if you ask me about Novak, I'll tell you that nothing is impossible.”
While that sounds like the tagline of a popular commercial, Djokovic continues to embody the essence of the message. Still ranked four in the world, an entire decade older than the next oldest member of the top-10 in the rankings, the Serbian Colossus continues to force his younger rivals to strategise for ways to combat him. At the Australian Open, that starts next Sunday, Djokovic will be gunning for a jaw-dropping 11th title. And, he will do so having chosen a build-up method that upends conventional logic.
‘Tune-ups' or ‘warm-ups' are an essential part of tennis lexicon. These tournaments, played in the lead up to an upcoming Grand Slam, offer players the chance to get accustomed to the surface they will play on, build intensity and focus, and clock vital match time in, so they arrive for the slamfine-tuned and ready. This year, Djokovic has chosen an alternative formula – preservation over preparation. His first round match at Melbourne Park will in fact be his first professional match of 2026. It will be the first time since 2018, when he was returning from a six-month injury break, that Djokovic would play at the Australian Open without participating in a tuneup event.
Announcing his decision to pull out of the Adelaide Open this week, a tournament he has won twice in the past, the 24-time Grand Slam champion revealed he didn't feel “quite physically ready to compete”. To the casual fan, this may appear to be an admission that his battle scarred body is succumbing to the demands of the circuit. For Djokovic though, the decision to eschew “warming-up” is in all likelihood, a calculated strategic move.
In essence, he is relying on muscle memory built over years of success in this arena, to carry him over the course of the two-week grind. There is not an inch of space in the facility that Djokovic does not recognise. He is assured in his routines, familiar in the surroundings and intimately aware of the levers he needs to pull to get the best service from his body and mind. As his body ages, every ounce of energy expended is that much harder to replenish. So, he has chosen a different pathway — at this time, less is more. Caution over bravado. Smarts over swagger.
Having played a mere 13 tournaments in 2025, pragmatic scheduling has now become Djokovic's entrenched operating method in this final phase of his storied career. Now, at the theatre where he has scripted some unforgettable memories, he arrives in the hope of climbing what appears to the everyday fan an impossible mission — unseating the two dominant figures of the modern game. There won't be miles in his legs in Melbourne, but Djokovic will be far from underprepared.
As fan boy Rune says: “If you ask me about Novak, I'll tell you that nothing is impossible.”
