Prakash Belawadi ‘Goosebumps’ Alert: Kannada Star Recalls Taj Heroes’ Bravery In 26/11, Stuns With ‘Bharat vs India’ Wisdom
More than 16 years after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, a powerful reflection on courage, values and quiet heroism has resurfaced, thanks to renowned Kannada actor and director Prakash Belawadi. His observations, shared on a recent podcast, have struck a deep chord, sparking widespread discussion about duty, ethics and the difference between ‘India' and ‘Bharat.'
Speaking on Bodh by Sharan Setty, Belawadi recalled the extraordinary conduct of the Taj Hotel staff during the 2008 attack. He began by laying out the scale of the crisis, “There were around 500 guests at the Taj Hotel when 26/11 happened and there were more than 600 staff members. There are 36 exits, you know, to that building. They all knew the exits."
What followed, he said, was nothing short of remarkable. Even in those hours of siege which lasted beyond a day, not a single hotel employee left the hotel, as the filmmaker explained, emphasising that the staff had every opportunity to escape, yet chose to prioritise guest safety over their own lives.
He then cited an interview of a girl from the Trident Hotel that deeply moved him. The girl, as he said, was 22 years old. He then shared her response when asked why she chose to stay in the hotel despite the danger. In Belawadi's words, “Why did you stay, you know, facing that danger?" Her response, he said, was simple and devastating. “She said ‘but who will look after the guests?'"
Why did Harvard University study Taj Hotel HR Management after 26/11 Terrorist attack?Very interesting observation by Prakash Belawadi sir pic.twitter.com/vHHXCVE9Rb

Belawadi explained that this spirit caught the attention of Harvard University and they decided to find out the HR practices in the hotel that could inculcate such values. He continued, “A team met Ratan Tata," who, according to Belawadi, refused to take credit. Belawadi quoted Tata's words, “I don't know. I think we did the same things. I don't think we did anything special."
Then, the researchers examined employee backgrounds where they discovered a striking pattern: “Not a single person was from a big city in India. They were all from rural, small-town India."
Belawadi concluded with a thought that has now fascinated the internet. He said, “That's the difference between Bharat and India. In Bharat, there is Dharma. In India, Dharma means religion. In Bharat, Dharma means doing the right thing."
Internet Shocked Over Actor's Observations
Belawadi's remarks have since taken on a life of their own online, with the clip being widely reshared and discussed across X. Many users said his explanation of Bharat vs India gave them literal goosebumps, calling it one of the most powerful speeches on values and duty in recent times. “Bharat vs India. Goosebumps for sure," wrote one user.

Others echoed the sentiment with personal recollections. One such comment read, “What he says is absolutely right. A college friend of mine was a chef at the Taj during 26/11. He & his entire team stayed inside. Not one ran away to save their own life. They stayed to serve their guests. Dharma teaches us to put duty first. That's the beauty of Indian culture." Another user kept it simple, writing just one word, “Goosebumps."

Historical Context And Academic Research
One detailed post added historical context, pointing to well-documented academic research on the subject. It said, “Titled ‘Terror at the Taj Bombay: Customer-Centric Leadership' (and later summarized in the HBR article ‘The Ordinary Heroes of the Taj'), is a renowned case study in HR and organisational culture." The user further explained that the study was conducted by Professors Rohit Deshpande and Anjali Raina.

Amid the heavy reactions, some kept it light-hearted with their jokes. An individual commented, “On a lighter note, Belawadi Sir IB / RAW / Intelligence ke itne roles kar chuke hain ki insights bhi unke waise hi ho gaye hain."
Together, the responses show how Belawadi's words on Bharat vs India struck a nerve with users.
