Powerful Earthquake Of Magnitude 6.6 Quake Strikes Off Sumatra; Coastal Areas Advised to Stay Alert
A strong M6.6 earthquake struck off Sumatra, Indonesia (25 km deep). No official tsunami warning, but coastal regions like Sri Lanka advised to stay alert.
A powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Sumatra Island on Thursday, adding to the devastation brought about by ongoing floods, deadly landslides, and a "rare" tropical cyclone. According to USGS, the shallow quake, at a depth of 25 kilometres, was centred near Simeulue Island in Aceh province.
Thankfully the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning Centre shortly afterwards confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami following the tremor. No immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake have been received.

This earthquake struck just when the Sumatra region started to deal with the disastrous implications of extreme weather conditions. The unprecedentedly unusual tropical cyclone has further worsened the humanitarian crisis in the country.
Deadly Toll: Torrents of rain brought by the weather system have brought disastrous floods and landslides to North Sumatra province, killing at least 28 people and leaving another 10 missing, confirmed Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the country's disaster mitigation agency.
The situation was further worsened by a "rare" tropical cyclone, Senyar, which blew across the island on Wednesday, flooding Malacca Strait and hampering coastal areas.
Rescue Setbacks: The resulting destruction badly impeded the rescue and aid efforts, with officials reporting a "total cut-off" of roads and communications in hard-hit areas, including Sibolga and Central Tapanuli.
Authorities focus on reaching and providing help to the victims of the environmental crisis.
Mass Evacuation: About 8,000 people have been evacuated across North Sumatra.
Logistics by Air: With roads blocked due to landslide debris, aid and logistics are being arranged and distributed by helicopter.
Ongoing Crisis: "Until now we can't communicate with folks in Sibolga and Central Tapanuli," said Yuyun Karseno, an official at the North Sumatra division of the disaster agency.
Indonesia's meteorological agency has warned of further flooding across other provinces in Sumatra, such as Aceh and Riau, in the course of the next couple of days due to continued extreme weather.
Visuals from the rescue agency show rapid currents of water flooding homes as rescuers deploy orange rafts to reach the residents.
