PM Modi meets exporters hit by US tariffs

In a crucial meeting late Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened with a group of exporters and industry leaders to dissect the ramifications of US tariffs affecting vital industries such as gems, textiles, marine products, and engineering. The dialogue underscored the government's initiative to encourage the pursuit of untapped global markets.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday night met exporters and officials of export promotion councils in industries affected by the US tariff such as gems and jewellery, textile, marine products and engineering goods to take a first-hand stock of the situation and suggestions from the industry, as per two industry executives present in the meeting.

The government has encouraged Indian exporters to expand business in other markets, the executives said. The exporters also sought financial measures from the government to tide over the situation. The dinner meeting continued till late night in the presence of senior bureaucrats.

A senior exporter, who was present in the meeting, said the prime minister wanted to understand the impact on Indian exports and the way forward. "It's a rare move from the PM to give us a hearing," he said.

Another exporter said the meeting was convened to seek inputs from leading export sectors on measures to strengthen India's competitiveness in global trade.

Some export promotion councils like the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) committed a $100-billion export vision plan to the PM. The marine product export council apprised the prime minister about emerging markets like the European Union and Russia.

The US is the largest export destination for India's exporting sectors such as gems and jewellery, seafood, textile and engineering goods. For the seafood and gems and jewellery exporters, the US accounts for nearly one-third of total sectoral exports from India.
