Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday added a splash of colour to diplomacy by flying a kite featuring Lord Hanuman at the International Kite Festival 2026 at Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Riverfront. The moment came during Merz's first official visit to India, blending high-level diplomacy with a distinctly Indian cultural celebration.
The two leaders jointly inaugurated the festival and were seen interacting with participants, soaking in the festive mood as kites filled the sky. The event comes just days ahead of Makar Sankranti and is being held at one of Gujarat's most iconic public spaces.
A festival with a global touch
The International Kite Festival will run for three days and conclude on January 14. This year's edition has drawn 135 international kite flyers from 50 countries. They are joined by 65 participants from different parts of India and 871 local flyers from Gujarat, turning the riverfront into a global meeting point for kite lovers.Visuals from the venue showed Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, underlining how cultural events are often used to add warmth to diplomatic engagements.
Visit begins with tribute at Sabarmati Ashram
Before heading to the festival, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Chancellor Merz at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. Chancellor Merz arrived in India earlier on Monday for a two-day official visit, his first since assuming office. According to a Ministry of External Affairs post on X, he received a warm welcome from Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat at the airport. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi.Merz will be in India from January 12 to January 13. The two leaders are scheduled to hold bilateral engagements from 11:15 am onwards at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
Agenda: trade, technology and green growth
During the talks, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz will review progress in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which recently completed 25 years. The discussions will focus on deepening cooperation in trade and investment, technology, education, skilling and mobility.Both sides will also look at expanding collaboration in defence and security, science, innovation and research, green and sustainable development, and people-to-people ties.
Germany visit and past engagements
On January 13, Chancellor Merz will visit Bosch and the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) before departing for Germany.Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz last met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, where they agreed to further broaden the bilateral strategic partnership. During that interaction, Modi invited Merz to visit India. The current visit also comes ahead of the India-EU Summit scheduled for January 27, adding diplomatic weight to the colourful scenes seen at the kite festival.
