PM Modi and Mamata Banerjee clash over the attack on BJP's Khagen Murmu, Shankar Ghosh

A political storm erupted in West Bengal after BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked while visiting flood-affected areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident, blaming the Trinamool Congress for insensitivity and poor law and order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee retorted, accusing the PM of politicizing a natural disaster without investigation.
Kolkata: Major political row has erupted over attack on BJP Malda North MP Khagen Murmu and BJP MLA and Chief whip Shankar Ghosh with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee getting engaged in war of words over the attack. While Prime Minister Modi condemned the attack on Murmu last night and called it a “clear reflection of the insensitivity of the Trinamool Congress” and raised questions about the “pathetic state of law and order in the state,” Banerjee retorted sharply, saying PM “has chosen to politicise a natural disaster without waiting for a proper investigation” in time of disaster.
No has been arrested in connection with the attack on the MP, though eight persons have been allegedly identified and FIR lodged yesterday by BJP leadership, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Both Murmu and Ghosh have been hospitalized in Siliguri. Murmu's condition remains serious as he has received severe injuries, with fracture under his eyes. Union Minister Kiren Rijju has reached North Bengal today to visit the flood affected areas in North Bengal.
Adhikari has rushed to North Bengal today to meet the disaster affected people in Mirik areas and will also visit his party colleagues in the hospital. BJP state President Samik Bhattacharya also visited the hospital. Central leadership, including Union Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and BJP National Vice-President J P Nadda, have expressed concern on the matter.
Leaving for Bagdogra this morning, Adhikari lashed out at Trinamool administration led by Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari criticized the attack on the BJP MP and claimed that despite FIR being lodged, no one has been arrested yet. “Khagen Murmu's condition is serious. We will wait for a certain time and if no action is taken, I will move High Court. It is clear who were the miscreants.”
“Chief Minister will visit Mirik as per programmes and will visit where bridge has collapsed. I will go to other areas. We all will do it all together. Why have Murmu and Ghosh were beaten, I am amazed. All are going without party flags and all should stand by people now,” Adhikari said, when asked about his schedule.
“CM Mamata Banerjee, your attempt to whitewash your Party Workers' 'Goondaism' is as predictable as it is pathetic. While North Bengal drowned in floods, you were busy dancing and merry making with Filmstars. The BJP Leaders went to help victims, something your "Administration" has spectacularly failed at. Hon'ble Prime Minister is 100% Accurate. Such violence wasn't even expected from your lowly thugs in this time of crisis. You are nothing but a 'Dictator in Denial'. Resign if you have any shame left,” Adhikari posted in his X Handle today, demanding CM's resignation.
Reacting sharply towards the ongoing tussle between Trinamool and BJP, West Bengal Congress leadership said that it is time for all to come together. “If the Centre and the state, Trinamool and BJP fight against each other, what will people think in this time of crisis? The need of the hour is close coordination between the Centre and the state, announcing the disaster as a ‘national disaster' and announcing compensation package. On the day of disaster, the carnival took place and CM was participating in it while BJP brought out ‘Parivartan Yatra'. CM should have come to North Bengal on that day,” West Bengal Pradesh Congress President (WBPCC) Shubankar Sarkar said as he visited Dudhiya in Mirik.
PM on Murmu attack vs Mamata Banerjee
Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night expressed concern on the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu. "The way in which our party's fellow workers—among whom there is also a current Member of Parliament and MLA—have been attacked while going to serve the flood and landslide-affected people in West Bengal is highly condemnable. This is a clear reflection of the insensitivity of the Trinamool Congress and the pathetic state of law and order in the state. It is my fervent wish that the West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress, in this difficult situation, refrain from engaging in violence and instead focus more on helping the people. I appeal to the BJP workers that they continue to stand by the public and assist in the ongoing rescue operations," Modi posted in his X Handle.Replying to PM's post, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted a long message in her X Handle and countered the X Handle post of Modi. Banerjee said, "It is unfortunate and deeply concerning that the Prime Minister of India has chosen to politicise a natural disaster without waiting for a proper investigation, especially while people in North Bengal are grappling with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides.”
“The PM has blamed the TMC and the West Bengal Government outright without a shred of verified evidence, legal inquiry, or administrative report. This is not just a political low, it is a breach of the constitutional ethos the Prime Minister has sworn to uphold. In any democracy, the law must take its own course, and only due process can determine culpability - not a tweet from a political pulpit.
The incident occurred in a constituency where the people themselves have elected a BJP MLA. Yet the Prime Minister sees no contradiction in painting the incident as a reflection of TMC's so-called “strongmanship.” Such sweeping, unsubstantiated generalisations are not only immature, but also, they are unbecoming of the highest office in the land,” Banerjee slammed the PM.
“Coming from a Prime Minister who visited Manipur only 964 days after it was engulfed in ethnic violence, the sudden concern for Bengal appears less like empathy and more like opportunistic political theatre. Yes, we all condemn violence, unequivocally. But this is not the time for partisan chest-thumping. This is a time to help and heal. It's also evident that BJP is resorting to the tired North Bengal vs South Bengal narrative, hoping to polarise people ahead of elections,” Banerjee said.
Banerjee urged the Prime Minister to listen to the elected state government, not just his party colleagues. “You are the Prime Minister of India, not just of BJP. Your responsibility lies in nation-building, not narrative-building. At this critical hour, let us not deepen divides. Let us stand united beyond party lines, to serve the people who need us the most. Let's leave politics for another day," she said.
