Pelvic Pain, Irregular Periods, Fatigue? These Could Signal Gynaecologic Cancer

Pelvic Pain, Irregular Periods, Fatigue? These Could Signal Gynaecologic Cancer
Between puberty and menopause, a woman's body goes through continuous hormonal and physiological transitions. While most of these changes are harmless, some – like irregular bleeding, pelvic discomfort, or postmenopausal spotting – can be early signs of gynaecologic cancers that often go unnoticed. Awareness and timely consultation are key to distinguishing normal changes from potentially serious ones.
“Gynaecologic cancers such as cervical, ovarian, uterine, vulvar, and vaginal cancers are likely to present silently with tiny, unobserved symptoms," explains Dr. Durva Kurkure, Consultant – Radiation Oncology, HCG Cancer Centre, Borivali, Mumbai.
She emphasises that vaginal bleeding, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, bloating, frequent urination, or persistent tiredness are among the earliest indicators. “Irregularities in menstrual cycles – very heavy, prolonged menstruation, or bleeding after menopause – must never be underestimated," she adds.
The challenge lies in how often these symptoms are dismissed. “Women have a tendency to normalise or attribute such changes to hormonal fluctuations, ageing, or stress," says Dr. Kurkure. Yet, early recognition makes all the difference. Detection of such symptoms at an early stage is essential because it really makes a difference in terms of curability.
“Routine gynaecologic visits, coupled with diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests, can help identify abnormalities before they are well established," Dr. Kurkure stresses. Regular check-ups – including Pap smears, HPV testing, and pelvic ultrasounds – remain some of the most effective tools for prevention.
Adding to this, Dr. Aravind Badiger, Technical Director at BDR Pharmaceuticals, highlights the role of lifestyle in prevention. “Maximum reproductive well-being and cancer prevention can be achieved by moderate drinking, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking," he says.
He notes that women above 40, or those with a family history of cancer, should be especially vigilant about routine screening. “Early detection significantly increases long-term survival rates," Dr. Badiger adds.
The evolving field of oncology offers new hope for women diagnosed early. “Recent medical advances have led to the development of drugs that specifically target cancerous cells while sparing healthy tissues," explains Dr. Badiger. These treatments are more effective and less damaging compared to traditional therapies, improving both survival and quality of life.
From the first menstrual cycle to postmenopausal years, every stage in a woman's life offers clues about her health. Observing irregular patterns, unexplained fatigue, or unusual bleeding and seeking early consultation can prevent minor symptoms from turning into major conditions. With awareness, preventive care, and modern medical support, women can protect their reproductive health and their lives from the silent threat of gynaecologic cancers.
