Passenger Opens Flight’s Emergency Door Claiming He Saw Weapon; Here’s What Police Found

A flight preparing to leave Atlanta on November 25 witnessed a stressful situation after a passenger suddenly opened the plane's emergency door. The moment shocked everyone on board, and the aircraft had to stop taxiing and return to the gate at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The passenger was identified as 48-year-old Johannes Van Heertum. Police said he opened the door and released the emergency slide after believing he saw someone with a weapon. This caused confusion inside the cabin and forced the KLM flight, which was headed to Amsterdam, to cancel its departure.

Passenger Claims He Saw A Weapon

According to Atlanta police, Van Heertum told officers that he thought he had noticed another traveller carrying a weapon. He even called 911 from inside the plane.

As quoted by CBS News, police said, “Van Heertum believed he saw another passenger with a weapon and appeared to have panicked, ultimately opening the emergency exit door and deploying the inflatable slide while the plane was taxiing."

The pilots stopped the aircraft on the runway, and the crew guided it back to the gate so officers could board. After the plane reached the ramp, police entered and removed Van Heertum from the cabin. He was checked by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) before being taken into custody.

Authorities later confirmed that there were no weapons found anywhere on the aircraft. Investigators said Van Heertum's behaviour appeared to be linked to a mental health episode, which may have caused him to misinterpret what he thought he saw.

Passenger Taken Into Custody After The Chaos

Van Heertum is now facing several charges. Police reportedly said he will be charged with reckless conduct, second-degree criminal damage to property, and interfering with security procedures.

After being evaluated, he was taken to Clayton County Jail. The Atlanta Police Department's Homeland Security Unit was also notified about the case because it involved aircraft safety.

KLM Airlines reportedly said the remaining passengers were moved to other flights as quickly as possible. The airline tried to reduce delays, especially since the emergency slide deployment made the original aircraft unusable.

Some passengers later described the moment the slide deployed as “terrifying." They said the loud noise and sudden movement caused panic among people seated nearby. Many were confused about what had just happened and why the plane was returning to the gate.
