A US bid to acquire Greenland for Arctic security has sparked a transatlantic row. France has sarcastically rebuffed President Trump's ambition, warning of damage to EU-US economic ties. The dispute escalates amid rising trade tensions and potential EU retaliation using its 'trade bazooka' against US tariffs.
What began as a strategic pitch from Washington over Arctic security has now turned into a public transatlantic spat, with France openly mocking US President Donald Trump's ambition to bring Greenland under American control and warning that any such move could damage economic ties between Europe and the United States.
The row flared after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Trump's focus on the Danish territory during a television interview on Sunday. Bessent said the 79-year-old President is worried about future Russian threats in the Arctic.

“Down the road, this fight for the Arctic is real...We would keep our Nato guarantees. And if there were an attack on Greenland from Russia, from some other area, we would get dragged in,” he said.
Bessent went further, arguing for pre-emptive action. “So better now, peace through strength, make it part of the United States, and there will not be a conflict because the United States right now, we are the hottest country in the world. We are the strongest country in the world. Europeans project weakness. US projects strength,” he said.
That logic drew sharp and sarcastic counterattacks from France's Foreign Ministry. On X, the official French Response account posted a series of mocking analogies. “If there were a fire someday, firefighters would intervene — so better burn the house now. If a shark might attack someday, intervention would follow — so better eat the lifeguard now. If there were a crash someday, damage would occur — so better ram the car now,” it wrote.France's Finance Minister Roland Lescure also issued a direct warning to Washington. “Greenland is a sovereign part of a sovereign country that is part of the EU. That shouldn't be messed around [with],” he said, according to the Financial Times. Lescure added that the same message had been conveyed to Bessent.
At the same time, Lescure said Europe still needs to work with the US on shared priorities, including a French-led G7 effort to reduce dependence on China for rare earth minerals.
Trump's 'have to have' Greenland pitch and EU's retaliation
The dispute comes as trade tensions rise. Trump has announced 10 per cent tariffs on several European countries, including Denmark and France, starting February 1, 2026. He has also warned the levy would rise to 25 per cent from June 1 if no agreement is reached on Greenland.On Truth Social, Trump said the US has been “subsidising” European countries for centuries and that it was time for Denmark to give back because “world peace is at stake”.
French President Emmanuel Macron pushed back strongly. “No intimidation nor threat” will influence the EU “nor in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world,” he said in a post.
A joint statement by eight European nations said they “stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland”.
The European Union is now weighing the use of its strongest trade defence tool, the Anti-Coercion Instrument, often called the ‘trade bazooka', to respond to the US tariffs. The move was discussed after emergency talks announced by Macron.
The EU, a bloc of 27 nations, remains America's largest export market, but the Greenland standoff is fast turning into a wider test of transatlantic ties.
