PAN-Aadhaar Linking Last Date: Even as the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline is today (December 31), many investors are unsure how an inoperative PAN impacts their existing investments and future transactions. While money already invested is generally safe, the ability to make new investments can be severely restricted.
PAN-Aadhaar linking must be completed by today, December 31, to avoid penalties and getting PAN inoperative.
Here's a clear breakdown of what continues and what stops if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar.
Demat account: buying blocked, selling allowed
If your PAN becomes inoperative due to non-linking with Aadhaar, your demat account is not closed, but it is effectively restricted. You will not be allowed to buy shares, ETFs or any new securities using that demat account.
However, selling existing holdings is allowed. This ensures investors can exit positions and access their funds even if PAN compliance is pending. That said, repeated transactions or account-level services may face delays until the PAN is made operative again.
Mutual fund SIPs: What continues, what stops
Existing mutual fund investments are not frozen immediately when PAN becomes inoperative.
Ongoing SIPs may continue for a limited period, depending on the AMC and intermediary.
New SIP registrations and fresh lump-sum investments are not allowed.
Changes such as SIP amount modification, scheme switching or starting additional SIPs may be blocked.
In short, money already flowing may continue temporarily, but fresh investment activity comes to a halt.
Can you buy stocks with an inoperative PAN?
No. Buying shares in the secondary market requires a valid and operative PAN. If PAN is inoperative, stock purchases through your trading account are not permitted.
Can you apply for IPOs?
No. An operative PAN is mandatory for IPO applications, whether through ASBA or UPI. Applications made with an inoperative PAN are liable to be rejected, even if payment is successful.
What about existing investments?
Your existing shares, mutual funds, bonds and SGBs remain safe. Ownership is not affected, and investments are not confiscated or cancelled. The restriction applies mainly to new purchases and certain account operations.
How to restore full access
Once PAN-Aadhaar linking is completed (along with payment of the applicable fee, if any), the PAN becomes operative again, and all investment-related restrictions are lifted. The restoration is usually automatic but may take a few days to reflect across systems.
