The United Arab Emirates has walked away from its plan to manage Islamabad International Airport, just weeks after UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan spent three hours in New Delhi signing major defense and energy deals with India.
According to Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune, sources revealed that the UAE could not find a suitable local partner to handle airport operations, even though discussions had been ongoing since August 2025.

Pakistani media reports made no mention of political motivations behind the failed deal. Yet the timing is hard to ignore, coming amid growing tensions between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, two Gulf nations that were once inseparable allies but now find themselves supporting opposing sides in Yemen's conflict.
The collapse also follows Pakistan's September 2025 defense pact with Saudi Arabia, which commits both countries to treat any attack on one as an assault on the other.
When Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed stopped in Delhi earlier this month, the visit packed substantial results into just a few hours. India and the UAE signed preliminary documents working toward a full Strategic Defence Partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the UAE leader described their bilateral relationship as entering a bold new chapter.
The two countries also finalized a USD 3 billion natural gas purchase agreement, positioning India as the UAE's biggest LNG buyer. Beyond energy, the deal covers nuclear cooperation, including plans to develop and install large nuclear reactors, along with safety measures.
Four decades ago, the UAE ranked among Pakistan's most important trading partners. Thousands of Pakistani workers found employment across the Emirates in various industries, and the two nations collaborated on defense, energy, and investment projects.
That relationship has steadily weakened over the years. Safety concerns, regulatory conflicts, and Pakistan's deteriorating infrastructure have all played a part. Poor management and political meddling have left Pakistan's government-owned companies drowning in losses. Last year, Islamabad sold off Pakistan International Airlines as the carrier faced financial collapse.
For Pakistan, losing the airport deal adds to mounting economic troubles and highlights fading influence with traditional Gulf allies. The difference is stark when compared to India's growing relationship with the UAE, which now spans military cooperation, energy security, and nuclear technology.
As Saudi Arabia strengthens military links with Pakistan and the UAE deepens partnerships with India, the Gulf's two most powerful states appear to be charting separate courses in South Asia, leaving Pakistan on one side of a widening divide.
