Pahlaj Nihalani, Ex-CBFC Chairperson and Film Producer, Passes Away at 76
Renowned film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani has passed away at the age of 76. As per reports, he had been battling liver-related ailments for some time. The last rites will be performed Santacruz Hindu Crematorium today, at 3 pm.
The family’s statement shared by NDTV read, “With profound grief, we inform you of the passing of our beloved Pahlaj Nihalani on 4th June 2026. The cremation ceremony will be held today, 04.06.2026 at 3 pm at Santacruz Hindu Crematorium. We are grateful for your thoughts and prayers as we bid a final farewell."
Nihalani was a well-known name in the Hindi film industry, having worked as a producer on several commercial films over the years. His filmography includes titles such as Aankhen, Andaz, Talaash, Rangeela Raja, and Julie 2, among others.
Beyond his work as a producer, he also served as the CBFC chief between 2015 and 2017. His tenure at the censor board frequently drew public attention, with several certification decisions sparking debates on creative freedom and film censorship in India.
During this period, his approach to film certification made him one of the most talked-about figures associated with the CBFC in recent years. The decisions taken under his leadership often led to widespread discussions within the film fraternity and among audiences.
Pahlaj Nihalani’s Work
Pahlaj Nihalani served as president of the Association of Pictures and TV Programme Producers for 29 years before stepping down in 2009.
Pahlaj Nihalani was especially known for his long association with actor Govinda and for backing several of the star’s early hit films.
Pahlaj Nihalani made his debut as a producer with Haathkadi in 1982, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Shatrughan Sinha. He followed it up with Aandhi-Toofan in 1985. In 1986, he produced Ilzaam, which became a landmark film as it marked Govinda’s debut in Hindi cinema.
Nihalani continued his production streak with Aag Hi Aag, Gunahon Ka Faisla and Paap Ki Duniya followed by Mitti Aur Sona in 1989.
CBFC Tenure
Nihalani served as CBFC chairperson from January 2015 to August 2017. Shortly after taking charge, he introduced a set of strict guidelines that proposed a complete ban on the use of abusive language, even in films rated ‘A’. He also stated that depictions of violence against women would be discouraged and that any content seen as hurting religious sentiments would not be permitted.
His tenure soon drew public attention over multiple censorship decisions. One such instance was the trimming of kissing scenes in the James Bond film Spectre, which led to criticism on social media. Nihalani defended the move, saying the cuts were made in line with existing rules.
The most high-profile controversy of his tenure came with Udta Punjab, a film on drug abuse in Punjab. On 4 June 2016, the CBFC recommended extensive cuts, sparking a nationwide debate on censorship and creative freedom. The board reportedly suggested 89 cuts to the film. However, the Bombay High Court ruled in favour of the filmmakers, allowing Udta Punjab to release with just one cut.
In August 2017, Nihalani was removed as CBFC chairperson and replaced by lyricist and advertising professional Prasoon Joshi. He alleged that his removal was connected to differences over film certification decisions.
After his exit from the CBFC, Nihalani returned to filmmaking. In 2017, he became the distributor of the erotic thriller Julie 2. He later produced Rangeela Raja (2019), starring Govinda.
