Over 4,000 Federal Workers Laid Off Across 7 Departments On Friday: Trump-Led Administration
More than 4,000 federal workers were laid off across seven departments, the US President Donald Trump-led administration said on Friday.
CNN cited a court filing as stating that those laid off included around 315 workers at the Department of Commerce, 466 workers at the Department of Education, 187 workers at the Department of Energy, between 1,100 and 1,200 workers at the Department of Health and Human Services, 442 workers at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, 176 workers at the Department of Homeland Security, and 1,446 workers at the Department of Treasury.
The filing was in response to a lawsuit in California filed by federal unions fighting efforts to lay off employees during the government shutdown.
The American Federation of Government Employees, along with another union representing federal workers, had filed a lawsuit in a California federal court to prevent the Trump administration from initiating the mass layoffs, calling them illegal.
While the White House has repeatedly blamed the Democrats for not allowing budget to pass, the government has started laying off even though administrations are not required to carry out firings when government funding lapses.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump said that his administration will start cutting programmes that are backed by Democrats.
“We're only cutting Democrat programmes, I hate to tell you, but we are cutting Democrat programmes," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday. “We will be cutting some very popular Democrat programmes that aren't popular with Republicans, frankly."
On Friday, Trump said: ““It'll be a lot of people. I must tell you, a lot of them happen to be Democrat oriented."
Following the decision, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said in a post on X: “The termination of federal employees in a shutdown will further hurt hard-working Americans who have dedicated their lives to public service and jeopardise agency missions once we finally re-open the government."
