Oscars 2026 Under Tight Security With Snipers, Drone Monitoring And 1-Mile Safety Ring | Details Inside
Hollywood may be rolling out the red carpet, but behind the glamour, the security operation for this year’s Academy Awards is anything but relaxed. As stars prepare to gather for the ceremony at the iconic Dolby Theatre, authorities have quietly turned the surrounding area into one of the most tightly guarded zones in the city.
Officials have implemented an unprecedented security plan around the venue at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles, creating multiple protective layers stretching nearly a mile around the site. The measures include heavy police deployment, surveillance systems and tactical teams stationed across the area as preparations intensify ahead of the ceremony.

Security agencies heightened their alert earlier in the week after an internal memo circulated among members of the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force. The document warned of unverified intelligence suggesting that Iran might consider launching a drone strike on targets along the US West Coast in response to potential US military action.
“We recently acquired unverified information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs] from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event of U.S. strikes on Iran," the memo sent to agencies in the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force said.
Authorities have stressed that the alert was precautionary and that there is currently no credible intelligence indicating an imminent attack.
The heightened vigilance also follows two suspected lone-wolf terror incidents reported earlier in the week. One occurred in Detroit, where a man drove an explosive-laden truck into a synagogue and preschool. According to reports, the attacker, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a US citizen from Lebanon, carried out the act after several of his family members were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Apart from a security guard who was struck by the vehicle and is expected to recover, no other injuries were reported.
Another violent incident unfolded at Old Dominion University, where a gunman entered an ROTC classroom and killed a US Army veteran and teacher before being subdued by students.
Against this backdrop, local authorities say security planning for the Oscars has been significantly intensified.
“Security is heightened more than years past not just because of ongoing events but because of the past few years," Mike Bland told the Los Angeles Times.
“Everything’s kind of heightened this year, more so than than last year. But we’re prepared for that," he said.
The strategy being used relies on layered protection.
“In Los Angeles, we use rings of security to harden the target," Jim McDonnell said. “Intelligence is the foundational factor — preventing something from happening before it does."
More than 1,000 officers from the Los Angeles Police Department have been assigned to the operation. A one-mile perimeter has been set up with roadblocks, checkpoints and strict vehicle monitoring. Officers are stationed across the area both in uniform and undercover.
Additional tactical teams are also part of the operation, including rooftop snipers, SWAT personnel, bomb disposal squads and canine units trained to detect explosives.
Law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times that the airspace surrounding the venue will also be monitored continuously. The surveillance extends beyond drones or aerial devices to potential airborne threats, including radiation detection.
Technology is also playing a key role this year. Advanced AI-powered surveillance cameras are being used to track unusual movements in crowds and flag individuals who may pose a risk.
“They scan the crowd continuously," Matt Sailor told The Hollywood Reporter.
“This turns a passive video feed into an active defensive layer."
“Hidden security can be more operationally impactful, while visible security serves as a stronger deterrent," he added.
While the streets outside are under strict watch, designers behind the stage inside the Dolby Theatre say their goal is to create a completely different atmosphere for the evening.
Production designer Misty Buckley described the stage as a place meant to offer comfort amid global tensions.
“It should feel like a sanctuary for celebration," production designer Misty Buckley told Vanity Fair.
Her colleague Alana Billingsley added that the design draws inspiration from calming natural elements.
“There is an unsettled nature around the climate right now, and there’s just something very calming about being surrounded by architecture, but having this space for trees to grow," fellow designer Alana Billingsley added.
