In September 2025, Larry Ellison beat Elon Musk and became the richest person in the world after his net worth surged to $393 billion. Larry Ellison is the founder of tech giant Oracle and is an ally of US President Donald Trump. Larry Ellison managed to surpass Tesla CEO Elon Musk and this rise was due to positivity around cloud infrastructure revenue after OpenAI committed to spend $300 billion with Oracle over five years. The jump in Larry Ellison came after shares in Oracle, which make up a significant part of Ellison's fortune, soared more than 40%, triggering a sharp one-day stock surge, also the company's strongest since 1992.
But things took a U-turn soon. According to a report in CNBC, the value of Oracle has since dropped by almost one-third (30%) over the last two months, completely erasing the stock gains from September. Larry Ellison's earlier stock surge boosted his wealth by $101 billion in a single day — the biggest one-day jump ever recorded by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The spike briefly pushed his net worth to $393 billion, placing him ahead of Elon Musk for a short period. At present, Musk's net worth stands at $430 billion, while Ellison's is at $275 billion.

How did Larry Ellison lose over $100 billion in 2 months?
Larry Ellison, the database pioneer began his success by founding Oracle in the 1970s, briefly became the richest person in the world in September 2025, topping Elon Musk before going back to second place. But over the past two months, the value of Oracle has dropped by almost one-third (30%).The company's stock is now headed for its steepest monthly drop since 2011. Analysts say the decline has drawn attention because the firm shifted from business software to cloud computing much later than its rivals. Its current growth plan relies heavily on artificial intelligence, with much of its future linked to how well OpenAI performs.
Moreover, Oracle's bold bet on artificial intelligence has sent ripples across the investors as the company has lost more than $300 billion in market value since a landmark partnership with OpenAI in September. Oracle's deal with OpenAI has now raised questions whether the deal will deliver returns or saddle Oracle with outsized risks. As reported by Financial Times, Oracle stock witnessed a steep drop since September, when it unveiled a $300 billion agreement with OpenAI.

The surge in Larry Ellison's wealth came after an earnings report that beat expectations, showed stronger bookings and delivered an upbeat forecast for cloud growth. These results triggered a 41% jump in Oracle's stock — the biggest rally in the company's history. But, in recent times, Oracle shares have since fallen 25% from last month, almost twice the drop seen in the next weakest hyperscaler, Meta. An FT index that tracks the value of Oracle's debt has also declined by about 6% since mid-September, a sharper fall than its industry peers.
