Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Eternal, which owns Zomato and Blinkit said that he was once considering asking Albinder Dhindsa, founder and CEO of the quick commerce platform, to step down.
In an interaction with podcaster Raj Shamani – responding to questions over potential conflict of interest arising from the company's acquisition of Blinkit in 2022 – Goyal said, “We were very objective in what we were doing. I was even at a point of asking Albi (Dhindsa) to leave because he was not the right leader for the organisation”.
The company's acquisition of Blinkit had attracted criticism over the pricing of the transaction and Goyal's conflict of interest arising from his close ties with Dhindsa, a former Zomato employee, whose spouse Akriti Chopra was then a cofounder at the food delivery firm. Chopra quit the company in September 2024.
Following the transaction, Zomato was criticised for not disclosing the close relationship between its founding team and Blinkit.
The company had acquired Blinkit (formerly Grofers) for Rs 4,447 crore, or around $568 million at the time, in an all-stock deal.
Speaking on the podcast, Goyal said that Blinkit was valued as a certain percentage of Zomato, and this portion was initially worth nearly $1 billion. However, as Zomato's stock price fell, the valuation of Blinkit also fell at the time of the transaction's close.

“I had never personally experienced a service, which was as addictive as Blinkit. The kind of convenience that we were getting was crazy. I knew this would become a business and people would love it,” Goyal said.
Following the acquisition, the company's stock took a hit with public market investors expecting the deal to extend the parent firm's path to profitability.
Blinkit, today, is the largest business vertical for Eternal in terms of net order value (NOV). In the July-September quarter, the quick commerce business reported NOV of Rs 9,891 crore, and clocked 223 million orders.
Blinkit had become a unicorn in 2021 following a $120 million funding round from Zomato and New York-based investment firm Tiger Global.
