Music legend KL Sehgal once predicted that Mohammed Rafi would become the ‘greatest singer in the world.' And he was right! During Bollywood's golden age, Rafi stood out for his unique voice. Many people know Rafi for his incredible singing, but few know about his early life and the journey that made him the best singer India has ever seen. Before he became a star, Rafi was called Pheeko and lived in Lahore. To support his family, he worked many small jobs while dreaming of a better future. A content creator recently shared a story about Rafi's beginnings.
As per the content creator, “A 9-year-old boy, whom his family called Pheeko, lived with his family in a small neighbourhood in Lahore. Due to their poor living conditions, he helped at his older brother's barber shop by cleaning tools, giving water to customers and sometimes cutting hair. But Pheeko didn't just cut hair, while cutting, he used to sing and people enjoyed listening to him. One day, an important visitor came to the shop and Pheeko, lost in his own world, began singing a famous Punjabi poem by Waris Shah while cutting hair."
The man who was getting his haircut was a well known music teacher named Pandit Jeevanlal. He invited Pheeko to visit his home and the next day, he gave Pheeko a chance to show his talent by holding an audition. Pandit Jeevanlal liked what he heard and began teaching Pheeko Punjabi songs and music lessons. Pheeko learned very fast and it felt like he was having God's blessing.
A few years later, there was a big All India exhibition in Lahore. By this time, Pheeko was 13 years old and went there to help the event organisers, hoping to earn some money. At the exhibition, a famous singer was expected to perform and people were excited to see him. However, just before the show started, the power suddenly went out. The singer refused to perform without a microphone, which made the audience upset who started shouting loudly.
The content creator added, “The organisers knew that Pheeko could sing, so they asked him to calm the crowd by singing. Pheeko went on stage in front of thousands of people without any fear and started to sing. When his voice echoed through the hall, everything became completely silent. After he finished, the entire hall erupted in applause. No one expected such a young boy to create such magic. The famous singer, placing his hand on Pheeko's head, said, ‘You will one day become the greatest singer in the world.' That famous singer was the legendary KL Sehgal, and the young boy, Pheeko, is the one we all know as Mohammad Rafi."

Mohammad Rafi passed away at the age of 55 in 1980.
