Novo Nordisk Weighs Ozempic Price Reduction As Competition Intensifies
Novo Nordisk is planning to cut prices of its GLP-1 drug Ozempic in India after a wave of low-cost generics entered the market following the expiry of the molecule’s patent, The Economic Times (ET) reported, citing industry sources.
According to ET, the revised pricing for Ozempic is likely to be at a 30–50 percent premium over leading Indian generic brands, which have priced semaglutide at around Rs 4,000 per month. This suggests a potential price band of roughly Rs 5,000–6,000 for Novo Nordisk’s drug.
At present, Ozempic is priced between Rs 8,800 and Rs 11,175 for a month’s dosage.
Industry insiders told ET that the company is aiming to compete primarily with large domestic players rather than smaller firms. The move is also seen as a response to aggressive pricing by Indian drugmakers and part of a broader strategy to protect and expand market share.
“We cannot confirm the matter at the moment," Novo Nordisk said in response to ET’s query.
Among the companies that launched generic semaglutide on the day the patent expired on March 21 are Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, and Zydus Lifesciences.
Dr Reddy’s has priced its GLP-1 injection Obeda at Rs 4,200 per month. Sun Pharma has introduced weekly therapies priced between Rs 900–2,000 for Noveltreat (for chronic weight management) and Rs 750–1,300 for Sematrinity (for type-2 diabetes). Zydus’ semaglutide injection is priced at around Rs 2,200 per month.
Meanwhile, companies such as Natco Pharma and Eris Lifesciences have launched more affordable vial-based options, with prices going as low as Rs 1,290 per month.
