Novak Djokovic Breaks Unprecedented Roger Federer's Record At Roland Garros
Novak Djokovic kept his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title alive at French Open on Wednesday, battling past French wildcard Valentin Royer in four hard-fought sets.
The Serbian star eventually sealed a 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7/9), 6-3 victory after nearly four hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier. In the process, Djokovic also set another milestone, recording his 120th men’s singles appearance at Roland Garros — the most matches played by any man at a single Grand Slam event in the Open Era, moving past Roger Federer’s 119 Wimbledon appearances.
Djokovic looked in control early, taking the opening two sets comfortably, but Royer, ranked 74th in the world and born just five kilometres from Roland Garros, produced a spirited response in the third set to force a tense tie-break.

The 38-year-old Serbian had squandered leads in the third but held firm in the fourth set, finally converting his fifth match point to advance.
He will next face Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca, who staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to beat Croatia’s Dino Prizmic.
Djokovic, who famously defeated Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semi-finals earlier this season, cannot meet the world No. 1 again until the final in Paris.
Other Results At Roland Garros
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev cruised into the third round with a straight-sets win over Tomas Machac, while Czech youngster Jakub Mensik survived a marathon five-set battle against Mariano Navone.
Mensik collapsed on court with cramp and exhaustion after finally sealing victory on his eighth match point as the Paris heatwave continued to challenge players physically.
On the women’s side, the biggest shock came with Elena Rybakina crashing out after surrendering a set lead against Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva.
The Australian Open champion fell 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10/4) in a dramatic second-round clash. It marked Rybakina’s earliest exit from a tour-level event since the 2025 Miami Open and her first defeat in the opening two rounds of a Grand Slam since the 2024 Australian Open.
Meanwhile, four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek continued her title charge with a composed win over Czech teenager Sara Bejlek.
Swiatek, now working with former Rafael Nadal coach Francisco Roig, will next face compatriot Magda Linette as she looks to maintain her flawless record of always reaching the second week in Paris.
Elina Svitolina and Mirra Andreeva also progressed, while 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini bowed out after a surprise defeat to Argentina’s Solana Sierra.
