‘Not Qualified To Become UNSC Permanent Member’: China Again Targets Japan Over Taiwan Remarks
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Wednesday said Japan is “incapable of shouldering the responsibility of safeguarding international peace and security" over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan.
Mao said Japan “is not qualified to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council".
The UN Security Council has five permanent members: China, the US, the UK, France and Russia.
Several countries, including India, have called for reforms to the UN Security Council so that it reflects the current multipolar order.
“Japan has not fully reflected on its wartime responsibilities and Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has recently made erroneous remarks about Taiwan, challenging the post-war international order," Ning said, referring to the Japan's colonial-era aggression in China.

Tokyo occupied Manchuria in 1931, launched a full-scale invasion in 1937, and committed mass atrocities such as the Nanjing Massacre, where over 200,000 civilians were killed. Forced labour, military occupation and wartime exploitation continue to shape China–Japan relations today.
Ning said the Japan PM's remarks on Taiwan earlier this month, where Japan's first female PM suggested that Tokyo could intervene militarily in any attack on Taiwan.
China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has been furious, summoning Tokyo's ambassador and advising its citizens against travel to Japan.
“A country like this is incapable of shouldering the responsibility of safeguarding international peace and security and is not qualified to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council," Ning further added.
Meanwhile, Japanese news outlets reported that China will suspend Japanese seafood imports although neither government confirmed the move.

Ning told a regular news conference: “Under the current circumstances, even if Japanese seafood were exported to China, there would not be a market."
Japanese government spokesman Minaru Kihara also said there had been “no notifications from the Chinese side on this".
