Spotify is going to rival Amazon and other platforms, not for its music catalogue but for selling physical books to buyers. Yes the streaming app will host physical books and let users buy it from the store. The sale of physical books is possible thanks to Spotify teaming up with online retailer Bookshop.org which suggests the company is eyeing the audio as well as the physical book market.
It is intriguing to see this happen, especially from a brand like Spotify which has heavily invested in the digital book and audiobook versions in the market till date. The timing also feels quite out of the blue because the sale of physical books have stagnated with people favouring the e-book and audiobooks instead.
Spotify Selling Books: But Why?
The company might have started as a music streaming app but it seems the audiobook revolution has prompted the platform to diversify its offerings to bring more users on board. Spotify is going to start the new service in the US and UK later this year, wherein Bookshop will be the main entity that will handle the warehousing, pricing and shipping of the books to the buyers.
This model effectively makes Spotify an alternative to Amazon and even bookstores that cater to millions of titles across the region. So while popular bookstores are shutting shop or being bought by big corporations, Spotify is taking the route back to the traditional form, albeit without actually investing in space or sending the items, which all falls on Bookshop to manage and handle the inventory as well.
The company is limiting this service to select regions but we are eager to see if markets like India get it and how it works out for buyers in other countries.
Spotify continues with its AI integration and more users are getting access to the new tools that are locked behind the Premium versions of the streaming platform. Prompted playlist is the latest to see its release extended to more regions like Canada and the US, giving more users the chance to let AI create the playlist based on their prompts and preferences that you seek.
