A high-speed solar wind stream is increasing visibility further south than usual, with peak activity expected between 5-8 p.m. EDT. Tips for optimal viewing include dark locations and clear northern views.
Skywatchers and space enthusiasts in parts of the northern United States may be treated to another display of northern lights on October 1 as geomagnetic storm conditions continue to buffet Earth's magnetic field. The geomagnetic storm brings the northern lights to several states in the country and the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G3(strong) geomagnetic storm watch for October 2.
NOAA has warned that geomagnetic storm conditions are likely to persist through the evening due to the impact of high-speed solar wind stream currently blasting Earth at 700 to 800 kilometers per second, according to Space.com. This has raised the likelihood of seeing the aurora borealis further south than usual, offering a glimpse of the northern lights for skywatchers in several northern-tier U.S. states — weather and light pollution permitting.

Northern lights in US
According to NOAA's Kp index forecast, geomagnetic storming is expected to peak between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. EDT (2100 to 0000 UTC), with the Kp index estimated to reach 5.67 — firmly within G2 levels. Given the continued disturbance in Earth's magnetic field and the strong solar wind, there's even a possibility for G3 (strong) conditions, especially if the magnetic field continues to tilt southward.Based on the latest NOAA aurora forecast map, the following seven US states appear fully or partially above the aurora view line: Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The report revealed that f G2 (Moderate)geomagnetic storm levels are reached, the auroras could extend further south than initially expected, potentially becoming visible in regions such as Michigan, New York, northern Illinois, and other mid-latitude states.
Auroras are highly unpredictable, so even if you're within the view line, you'll still need cloud-free skies, minimal light pollution, a clear view northward and a bit of luck to catch the display.

Aurora borealis to be visible in Canada too
After nights of bright auroras shining in the sky, a blustery solar wind stream may spark even more displays of the Northern Lights across Canada. According to the SWPC forecast, the geomagnetic storm is expected to peak Wednesday evening, between 21:00–00:00 UTC (5–8 p.m. EDT, 6–9 p.m. ADT, 6:30–9:30 p.m. NDT).This timing suggests that the best chance to spot auroras will be in the eastern half of the country, shortly after sunset. Conditions are expected to calm afterward, though brief bursts of activity—known as substorms—may still appear later in the night. Geomagnetic storms usually last at least three hours, while substorms are shorter but can be just as intense, sometimes pushing auroras farther south before quickly fading.

If you're in one of the seven US states listed above, here are some tips for catching the display:Head to a dark location far from city lights
Find a north-facing view with a clear horizon.
Look up around midnight to 2 a.m. local time, but keep watch as soon as skies darken
Be patient. Auroras often come in waves and can appear faint at first.

The current geomagnetic storm is being driven by a fast-moving solar wind released from a coronal hole—an opening in the Sun's magnetic field that lets high-speed particles escape. Since late Sept. 30, this stream has been colliding with Earth's magnetic field, producing storm activity fluctuating between G1 and G3 levels.
