'No Need For Boos': Sergio Perez Urges Fans To Respect Lando Norris Amid Heated Title Race

Sergio Perez has urged F1 fans to balance their passion with respect, after McLaren driver Lando Norris was repeatedly booed on the podium in Mexico and Brazil.

It's no secret that the Brit has been on the receiving end of quite the criticism, valid or not, especially amid the heated championship race with Piastri and Verstappen, and McLaren's controversial/confusing ‘Papaya Rules'.

In fact, Norris, who leads the drivers' championship by 24 points over teammate Oscar Piastri, has faced jeers mixed with cheers after winning the last two Grands Prix.

Perez, a former Red Bull member and to-be Cadillac driver, said while fan emotion is part of F1's magic, it should never cross the line into hostility toward drivers who've earned their victories.

“I don't think that's nice, obviously, to be booing the guy that won a race," Perez told Reuters during a visit to his new Cadillac F1 team's base in Silverstone.

“But at the same time, it's also good to see the feelings of the fans, how passionate they are. I just think it's got to be done with respect. We have to have respect for the guy who won the race, always," the six-time race winner added.

Racing Bulls' Hiccup With Lando At Interlagos

Adding to the controversy, Red Bull's sister team, Racing Bulls, found itself under scrutiny this week after a video surfaced showing one of its employees giving thumbs-down gestures as Norris celebrated his Brazilian Grand Prix win.

Racing Bulls moved swiftly to distance themselves from the behaviour, releasing a statement that read:

“It doesn't reflect our team's values or the spirit of VCARB (Visa Cash App Racing Bulls). The matter has been handled internally. We believe in celebrating great racing and showing respect to every driver, team, and fan both on and off the track."
