'No more dudes in dresses, DEI, gender delusion': Pete Hegseth's fiery warning as he unveils sweeping military revolution
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed military leaders in Quantico. He mandated strict fitness standards for all ranks, criticizing overweight generals. Hegseth also ended "woke" policies like identity months and DEI offices. He emphasized warfighting readiness as the military's sole mission and he has also told US generals to prepare for war.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Tuesday once again focussed on fitness requirements in the US military and hit out at overweight generals, admirals, the defence secretary stating that he no longer wants to see “fat generals and admirals” or overweight troops. He was addressing a crowded auditorium in Quantico.
Pete Hegseth emphasized the need to stick to strict fitness standards, declaring every service member at every rank is required to take a physical fitness test, and meet height and weight requirements twice a year.
He also criticized the practice of promoting leaders based on racial and gender quotas or for achieving "historic firsts." Hegseth today fired a direct message to America's top generals: "No more DEI, dudes in dresses, or gender delusion .... prepare for war." Hegseth said that America's enemies would 'FAFO', which stands for 'f*** around and find out,' if they chose to challenge its military might.
Pete Hegseth on 'fat general admirals'
The defence secretary stated that lack of discipline and ‘fat general, admirals' in the halls of the Pentagon has led to decades of decay in the military. “Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations, or really any formation, and see fat troops,” he said. “Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon leading commands around the country and the world.”ALSO READ: Government shutdown: Who will still get their paychecks if a shutdown happens in the US? “It's a bad look. It is bad, and it's not who we are,” he continued. "The era of politically correct, overly sensitive don't-hurt-anyone's-feelings leadership ends right now at every level," Hegseth said.
“I don't want my son serving alongside troops who are out of shape, or in a combat unit with females who can't meet the same Combat Arms physical standards as men, or troops who are not fully proficient on their assigned weapons, platform, or task, or under a leader who was the first but not the best. Standards must be uniform, gender neutral and high,” he added.
Emphasising physical fitness, Pete Hegseth said, "It's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon leading commands around the country, in the world, it's a bad look." “It all starts with physical fitness and appearance,” he said. “If the Secretary of War can do regular, hard PT [physical training], so can every member of our joint force.”

“Today at my direction, every member of the joint force, at every rank, is required … [to] meet height and weight requirements twice a year every year,” Hegseth added. “The military has been forced by foolish and reckless politicians to focus on the wrong things,” he argued, before adding, “This speech is about fixing decades of decay, some of it obvious, some of it hidden.”
He added that the U.S. military will mandate troops in combat roles to meet “this highest male standard only,” requiring every service member in such positions to score above 70 percent on the “male standard” of their branch's physical fitness test.
Hegseth tells top generals to prepare for war
Pete Hegseth told a rare meeting of the most senior military leadership in the U.S. that they must "prepare for war"."From this moment forward, the only mission of the newly restored Department of War is this: Warfighting," Hegseth said in his speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, referring to the name now used by the Trump administration for the Department of Defense.
"Preparing for war and preparing to win. Unrelenting and uncompromising in that pursuit. Not because we want war. No one here wants war. But it's because we love peace."

Hundreds of generals and admirals with one-star rank or higher, along with aides and senior staff, were called from all around the globe to attend the meeting in Quantico, Virginia, Tuesday, for an address by Hegseth and President Donald Trump.
Trump and Hegseth used the speech to declare an end to “woke” culture in the military and targeted other policies of past administrations. Since assuming office under Trump, Hegseth has prioritized physical readiness as a key component of his effort to revive what he describes as the military's “warrior ethos.” He has consistently emphasized the role of updated fitness standards within this larger initiative.
Hegseth also railed against what he described as "woke" in his department.
"No more identity months, DEI offices, dudes in dresses, no more climate change worship, no more division, distraction or gender delusion, no more debris. I've said before and will say again, we are done with that s***," the Secretary of Defense said. “We are overhauling an inspector general process — the IG that has been weaponized, putting complainers, ideologues, and poor performers in the driver seat,” he told senior leaders at Quantico.

On the Equal Opportunity program, he said: “No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complaints, no more repeat complainants, no more smearing reputations, no more endless waiting, no more legal limbo, no more side-tracking careers, no more walking on eggshells.” He added, “Of course, being a racist has been illegal in our formation since 1948. The same goes for sexual harassment. Both are wrong and illegal.”
Hegseth also ordered “a full review” of terms like toxic leadership, bullying, and hazing, which he argued have been “weaponized.” “The definition of ‘toxic' has been turned upside down, and we're correcting that,” he said. “If that makes me toxic, then so be it.” He later added drill sergeants can “put their hands on recruits” and use “tried and true methods” to motivate them.
Trump said his administration has committed to spending more than $1trillion on the military in 2026. He also added Hegseth would soon be announcing major reforms to "streamline military acquisitions and expedite foreign military sales."
