Nifty, PSU, Private Indices Gain Over 1%; Axis Bank, ICICI Bank Lead Gains
Banking stocks led the market higher on Tuesday, with the Nifty Bank and its key sub-indices outperforming broader benchmarks amid broad-based buying. The rally was supported by easing crude oil prices and improving global risk sentiment.
At around 10:00 am, the BSE Sensex was up over 500 points, or 0.64%, at 79,021, while the Nifty 50 gained 137 points, or 0.56%, to trade at 24,502. The Nifty Bank index rose 1.09% to 57,200, clearly outperforming the broader market. Both the Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank indices also advanced over 1% each.
The rally was broad-based across segments. Among private lenders, Axis Bank rose about 1.4% and was among the top Nifty gainers, while ICICI Bank gained over 1%. HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank also traded nearly 1% higher, while Kotak Mahindra Bank posted modest gains.
Public sector banks mirrored the strength, with Union Bank of India up around 1.6%, Canara Bank gaining 1.4%, and Bank of Baroda rising over 1%. Sector heavyweight State Bank of India also traded in the green, contributing to the index’s gains.
Mid-sized lenders participated as well, with Federal Bank and IDFC First Bank advancing, while Yes Bank edged higher.
The strength in financials came alongside improving global sentiment. Asian markets rebounded on hopes that Iran may participate in peace talks with the United States, easing concerns around prolonged geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Crude oil prices also cooled after recent spikes linked to supply disruption fears around the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude slipped towards the mid-$90 per barrel range, while WTI crude also eased. Lower oil prices are typically positive for domestic equities, especially rate-sensitive sectors like banking, as they help contain inflation and ease pressure on interest rates.
Sectorally, gains in banking were accompanied by strength in rate-sensitive segments such as realty and auto, while the India VIX declined over 4%, indicating reduced market volatility.
Market breadth remained strong, with advances comfortably outpacing declines. Notably, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank were among the top gainers on the Nifty.
