New IIP facility in Bengaluru will play vital role in packaging education, research: Minister Piyush Goyal
Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), opened its Bengaluru Centre on Friday (October 31, 2025).
The new facility would play a vital role in packaging education, research, testing, and certification, said Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry while inaugurating the centre here.
IIP Bengaluru, would integrate AI-enabled testing, data analytics, and smart packaging demonstrations—building capacity for innovation, skill development, and industry collaboration in next-generation packaging technologies.
Built on a 4-acre patch of land, the institute in Bengaluru was designed to serve as a hub for testing, training, research, and technology transfer. Equipped with advanced material testing, chemical analysis, and transport testing laboratories, the centre would cater to diverse industrial sectors including food processing, pharmaceuticals, logistics, e-commerce, and consumer goods.
IIP officials said a special highlight of the new facility is its dedicated Food Packaging Line, developed to provide hands-on training, live demonstrations, and skill development. This line is equipped with form-fill-seal machines, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems, vacuum packaging units, shrink packaging, and barcode printing equipment, enabling participants to gain practical exposure to modern packaging operations and quality assurance techniques.
Headquartered in Mumbai, IIP already operates regional centres in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow.Over the decades, IIP has played a pivotal role in advancing packaging standards, fostering sustainable and scientific packaging practices, and driving India's emergence as a global hub for packaging excellence and innovation, according to Prabhakar Bantwal, Vice Chairman, and Prof. Tanweer Alam, Additional Director, of IIP.
The packaging industry provides direct and indirect employment to over 5 million people across design, manufacturing, testing, logistics, and retail sectors.
According to industry players, the key growth drivers of the industry have been FMCG, food processing, and pharmaceutical sectors, which together account for over 70% of packaging demand. E-commerce and logistics boom, requiring innovative, lightweight, and sustainable packaging for safe product delivery also contributed to the growth of the packaging industry in addition to rising consumer awareness of hygiene, safety, and convenience, spurring demand for modern and functional packaging formats, they said.
