New Gun, Same Aim: Manu Bhaker Eyes Strong Comeback In 2026 After Quiet Year
Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker believes Italian manufacturer Pardini's new sport pistol offers better balance, as the Indian shooter sets her sights on a return to the podium following a relatively subdued 2025 by her own high standards.
With 2026 packed with major events — including the Asian Championship in New Delhi, the Asian Games in Japan, and the ISSF World Championships — Bhaker is already looking ahead.
“2025 was a full-circle year for me," Bhaker said on Thursday. “I shot some very good matches and was in decent form, but the podium finishes were fewer. I'm hoping that changes soon."
The 23-year-old has switched to Pardini's latest model for the 25m sport pistol, while continuing with her trusted pistol in the 10m air event: a setup she has used since 2017.
“The company claims the new pistol is better in precision and balance, and we're trying it out," she said. “At the end of the day, results depend on us, not the pistol. But even the slightest improvement helps, and I do feel it's better in terms of balance."
A major boost to Bhaker's resurgence has been her reunion with coach Jaspal Rana, bringing renewed stability and sharper execution, particularly under pressure.
The pair made targeted changes after the Paris Games, including equipment upgrades and grip adjustments to align with new ISSF rules.
“The technique and mindset remain the same," she explained. “How we approach competition and execute shots hasn't changed."
Bhaker made history at Paris 2024 by becoming the first Indian since Independence to win two medals at a single Olympic Games, clinching bronze in women's 10m air pistol and the mixed team event.
“The end goal is still the Olympics," she said. “But the Asian Games, World Championships and quota events are all part of progressive growth."
The upcoming Asian Rifle and Pistol Championship, to be held at the Dr Karni Singh Range from February 2-14, will serve as a key analytical checkpoint.
Bhaker added that expectations and criticism no longer weigh on her.
“I've seen a very positive change in how people support me," she said. “Praise or criticism doesn't affect me much anymore. Earlier it did, but not now."
