New Ghaziabad RTO Rules: Vehicle Location Tracking Device Mandatory From April 1
In a major move to strengthen road and passenger safety, the Ghaziabad Transport Department has made it compulsory for all commercial vehicles operating within the district to install a Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) from April 1.
Vehicles without the tracking device will not be permitted to operate on the roads.
The decision will impact a large number of vehicles in Ghaziabad, a key industrial and transport hub. According to official data, more than 40,000 buses, taxis, school vans, loaders and other commercial vehicles registered in the district will come under the rule.
The department has clarified that all registered commercial vehicles aged between 10 and 15 years must install an AIS-140 certified VLTD through authorised vendors within the stipulated time frame.
The VLTD is not merely a tracking tool but an advanced safety mechanism. The GPS-based device is aimed particularly at enhancing the safety of women and children during emergencies.
Each vehicle will also be fitted with a panic button. If pressed in an emergency, the alert will be transmitted directly to the department’s command centre, enabling swift response and necessary action.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has announced that from April 1, vehicles without an active VLTD will face restrictions on the online portal. The following services will be locked:
Vehicle owners will have to bear the installation cost themselves at authorised centres. Officials state that installing an AIS-140 certified VLTD along with a panic button will cost between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000.
This amount includes the device cost, installation charges, and SIM/software rental for one to three years.
After installation, the device must be integrated with the department’s command centre server. Only once it is successfully linked will the RTO software grant clearance to the vehicle.
