'Never felt this much behind': Andrej Karpathy says programming being refactored by AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) researcher and former Tesla AI chief Andrej Karpathy said in a reflective post on X that software development is undergoing a major shift and that traditional coding skills may no longer be enough to keep up.
Karpathy said he has “never felt this much behind as a programmer,” describing the change in how code is now written, optimised, and deployed. “The profession is being dramatically refactored,” Karpathy wrote.
He argued that developers today could be “10X more powerful” if they learned to effectively use the expanding ecosystem of AI-driven programming tools. These include not just code completion systems but also new abstractions such as “agents, subagents, prompts, contexts, memory, tools, plugins, workflows, and IDE integrations.” The challenge, he said, is that this new layer of “programmable abstraction” sits on top of traditional software stacks but behaves in unpredictable ways, requiring engineers to rethink how they design and orchestrate systems.
“Clearly some powerful alien tool was handed around,” the post read, “except it comes with no manual and everyone has to figure out how to hold it and operate it, while the resulting magnitude 9 earthquake is rocking the profession.”
Developers and AI researchers have been discussing the pace of change in AI-assisted coding from agents such as GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's GPT-based tools capable of coding.
“Roll up your sleeves to not fall behind,” he urged fellow engineers.
