Netanyahu May Brief Trump On Possible Strikes On Iran Nukes: Report
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to brief US President Donald Trump about possible attacks on Iran during his upcoming visit to the United States, NBC News reported.
Trump and Netanyahu are expected to meet later this month in Florida at the US President's Mar a Lago estate in Florida. As per the report citing sources, Netanyahu is expected to make the case to Trump that Iran's expansion of its ballistic missile program poses a threat that could necessitate swift action during this meeting.
Earlier this week Trump said that Netanyahu would likely visit him in Florida during the Christmas holidays, as he pushes for progress on the next phase of Gaza peace talks. “Yeah, he'll probably come to see me in Florida," Trump told reporters. “He would like to see me. We haven't set it up formally, but he'd like to see me," he added.
Israel is growing increasingly concerned that Iran is rebuilding, and even expanding, its ballistic missile production and the former is preparing to bring this to Trump's attention with a bid to attack Iran again, the report said citing a person with direct knowledge of the plans and four former US officials briefed about the plans.
Israeli officials are concerned that Iran is reconstructing its nuclear sites which were destroyed when the US bombed them in June during the Israel-Iran war, the report added.
While Israel has publicly called Iran's nuclear program an existential threat, sources familiar with the matter said that ballistic missiles are seen by Jerusalem as a more pressing concern.
“The nuclear weapons program is very concerning. There's an attempt to reconstitute. It's not that immediate," a source told the news outlet.
“But the threat of the missiles is very real, and we weren't able to prevent them all last time," another source stated.
Sources also said that part of Netanyahu's argument to Trump would be that Iran's actions pose a threat to not just Israel but also the wider region which includes US interests.
Responding to NBC News, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said that the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iranian government “corroborated the United States government's assessment that Operation Midnight Hammer totally obliterated Iran's nuclear capabilities".
“As President Trump has said, if Iran pursued a nuclear weapon, that site would be attacked and would be wiped out before they even got close," she added.
In June this year, long-standing tensions between Israel and Iran escalated into direct military engagement after Israel launched a large-scale offensive targeting Iran's nuclear, missile and military infrastructure in what it described as a pre-emptive effort to thwart Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
Iran responded with hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones, striking Israeli cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem and triggering extensive air-raid alerts.
