Nepal hit the headlines on September 4 when it blocked 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Reddit, X and YouTube. The issue quickly spiralled out of control with citizens protesting on the streets, ultimately leading to 19 deaths. The government finally lifted the ban on Monday, calling for dialogue with the protestors.

What led to the ban?
The ban followed a government directive requiring all social media companies to register and appoint a local representative in Nepal.
Government officials stated they wanted to regulate social media companies and online content, combat misinformation, hate speech and online fraud.
Most major platforms did not comply with the seven-day registration deadline set in August. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology said the ban aligns with Supreme Court orders on unregistered foreign companies.
Who was impacted?
The following 26 platforms were blocked: Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, X, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Reddit, Discord, Pinterest, Signal, Threads, WeChat, Quora, Tumblr, Clubhouse, Mastodon, Rumble, VK, Line, IMO, Zalo, Soul, Hamro Patro, BeReal.
TikTok and Viber complied with the government order, and remained operational.
Gen Z protests
Hundreds of thousands of protests broke out, with Nepali youth and students attending in large numbers, leading to the event being called "Gen Z Protests". The protesters wanted the ban to be lifted and also started raising issues around corruption during the rallies.
The demonstrations then turned violent as the agitators tried to enter secured government buildings. Police used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. At least 19 people died and more than 100 were hurt in clashes.
Government response
Following the deaths, the Nepalese government called an emergency cabinet meeting, and subsequently lifted the ban, citing the need to respond to public demands. Prime minister KP Sharma Oli said ambiguity and generational differences were behind the unrest.
India's response
India on Tuesday said it is deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives during protests in Nepal and hoped that the issues would be resolved through peaceful means.
"We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. "As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue," the MEA said in a statement.
Ban impact
Internet providers said over half their traffic was social media related, and the ban hurt business operations. Millions of Nepali social media users faced outages. There were disruptions in communication, business, and access to information.
